Perfect.
Either phone will do what you want to do then. So it comes down to newer hardware and the likely hood of getting that one extra upgrade in vs the extras that come from the manufacturer.
Battery life does play into this a little I will give maxx users that. They get great life out of that monster. Negating that though is the fact that with the sgs3, you can carry a spare and replace it if needed (or if the battery dies totally, which is rare). For a single charge, maxx is the winner. Overall on battery it is a push. I do get great life out of my sgs3, 14 hours or so.
I have to say that I am not all that well versed with moto blur but I am sure that the sgs3 has more features baked it. Yes it is ugly but I use apex launcher.
The Multi window function, smart stay, camera extras all make it more worth more to be than the moto. I know moto tries to stay close to stock, and smart actions are nice and very useful, but I will still take the sgs3
Next up is the hardware. The maxx HD has newer hardware, but it isn't that big a leap. Still the edge has to go to moto.
Samsung has proven that updates really aren't their thing. A few of their phone have missed out on updates they should have gotten. Yes I am looking at you atrix. They also have a bit of history screwing the consumer. Yes I am referring to the original RAZR, that got trumped by the maxx what a month after release? They should have been at the same time.
Samsung is getting much better at updates, though both phones will suffer at Verizon's hands, and keep supporting the older phones. The sgs2 is getting jb if I remember right.
I am giving the edge to samsung in the software and support department.
If you do decide to root and rom, the samsung is easier and there is a larger dev community.
Overall if I am given these two choices, I would take the sgs3. They both do what you need and do it well. The sgs3 has more going for it now and in the long run.
What I would do overall is wait. If your phone is doing what you need for now, see what is coming at the end of next month and when the sgs4 is announced and decide from there.
The battery life and features on the next gen are going to be out of this world.
