Concerns About the G4's Leather Back

So I'm sure that I'm getting a G4, and am starting to learn towards the leather back. I use my phone in an armband during workouts and am really concerned that getting sweat on the leather will ruin it. Aside from sweat, I would think that even setting it down on a table with a wet spot or something like that might mess it up too because I read that vegetable tanned leather is very susceptible to water damage. Any thoughts? Or am I worrying about a non-issue?

It's a little too early to say what the long term effects would be with the G4's leather back; however, if the quality is anything like the Moto X 2014 then there won't be anything to worry about. It's a great looking device and the leather option is attractive, so if you decide on getting it, don't let that ruin your experience with it.

Should be fine long term if you take care of the leather. I'd use saddle soap and a good leather conditioner. You can also apply a leather protector spray.

use an iPod instead of lugging a gigantic phone on your arm

Leather is cow skin. Cows sweat. End of story.

Nothing wrong with getting it a little wet if you take the time to clean and condition it every now and then. I've gotten the leather strap on my Moto 360 wet about a million times and it still looks and feels like new.

Like anything in life if you take care of it you shouldn't have a problem.

Do you wear your best cloths outside to work or run in?

Get a extra plastic back for it....

If you become more conscientious of your things you won't be as likely to allow them to be damaged. If you can't, get a case to put it in.

As to the various protective sprays and cleaners, it's best to see what LG recommends to use on them if anything, because you wouldn't want to separate the leather from the back on it.

Agree, I'd think the leather would get spooged up pretty quick, not something I'd be into that's for sure.

My primary concern with the leather is how it would become a desk frisbee when placed face up. I use a number of apps for my job and my phone becomes a mini-computer by default at times, it could get irritating having it spin around when punching in numbers.

Why not get a non-leather back and use that at the gym if you're concerned? It takes about 10 seconds to change it. My solution is to just use Sansa Clip+ at the gym. Lightweight and inexpensive, and the sound is pretty decent.

It will only get nasty if you let it,

I work in hospitals and have never allowed my phones to get nasty.I will only use the leather when going out and keep it for good just as I do for any other leather goods I use often.

In your situation of needing the phone to lay flat.. I would use a small stand for it. I love my Sedeio commuter case's built in kick stand and if they build one for this phone I'll pick one up along with a tempered glass screen protector.

honestly i am more concerned about scuffing it then it getting wet, leather scuffs, and while i really like the looks of the leather, i just cant bring myself to not have a case on my phone that will protect it from a cracked or broken screen when dropped, and eventually all phones hit the ground. no matter how carefully they are treated

But the screen is curved to make it harder to break the screen...

I love to use wallet cases. Will the leather back phones work with theses cases. I want the leather back for the times my phone goes naked.

Well since I haven't seen many cases actually made for this phone that you can't buy yet I dont think many would know...

I have had my Moto X 2014 since Oct 2014. It has the leather back , took to gym lots of times caseless.
I also have used my phone between sets of reps while at the gym so my hands probably were not totally dry so I know the leather got damp.
I just clean the leather back phone on my Moto X 2014 with saddle soap (as mentioned already) when I get home from gym.
I have not seen any type of damage to the leather ,it still looks great. :)
So I assume the same will be true with the LG G4

The worn in look is actually what I desire with the leather back. Give some scuffs, and some wear marks, it'll really look good after a few months use I'm betting.

True but I'm still hoping. I wish they could measure the thickness between the plastic back and leather one.

This is exactly what I'm hoping for. I want the leather to mark and darken - does anyone know if there's any reason it wouldn't? I wouldn't be happy if after 6 months it still had the same "off the shelf" brown colour.

People who are "into" leather products sometimes use oils and sunlight to darken them. Any reason this wouldn't work with the G4?

Asking people who are into leather on a blog could go to some pretty weird places :) no reason it won't age like a coach wallet.
