Condition of phone for Next trade-in upgrade

I know no one has yet to trade in a phone after 12 months with the Next program since it's only been 8 months or so since the program began. But I'm wondering exactly what kind of condition the phone has to be in. AT&T simply says it has to be "fully functional and in good physical condition." I used to more or less baby my phones to maintain resale value -- i.e., using a screen protector and a protective case -- but now I'm thinking about caring a bit less and not using these things. Thoughts?

My understanding is it can NOT have cracks or water damage. Otherwise a scratch in the screen is fine. I don't use nor plan to use NEXT but if you are...make sure you understand it fully. Not just an idea. As its much like a contract! Just some advice. (Buy a new device on a CC and treat like you have with your other devices. This way you don't need to worry about it. Just my thought.)

Thanks. Oh, I understand Next fully all right -- it's not just like a contract, it IS a contract! And the language of the contract says the device has to be in "good condition." So I agree, a cracked screen would not be "good condition," but they have to draw the line somewhere. I've gone without cases and screen protectors before, and the screen will sometimes get little micro-pits, and maybe the shell of the device will get some rashes here and there. I would think that could still be "good condition," but I don't believe I'm the one who makes that call.

I agree, continuing to protect the device as one would if one were going to resell it is probably the best defense. But still the downside to pitting and rashing making a device not in "good condition" under the Next contract after 12 months would be having to hold onto (and pay for) the device for another 8 months, at which time you can just get another Next upgrade and keep (and sell for whatever) the old device.

For what it's worth, I was told that the trade-in phone doesn't have to match the exact serial number of the one they gave you. It just needs to be in good condition.

But to be clear it has to be the same model. So model number needs to match. AKA Moto X Pure Edition can not be turned in in place of the att Moto X if the model numbers are not the same. (And they are not) This is just so others don't get confused. I don't support NEXT but if your gonna use it you should understand it! :)

How not? Not everybody can afford or feel like paying full price for a phone and depending on phone next means free phone if your not eh 10gb or higher plans.
