Confession: This "X Feature" stuff is annoying

How can that be when the maxx has the same underlying hardware, same software, a larger screen, bigger battery and better form factor?

See what I did there. I took my opinion, mixed it with a few casual observations, and stated it as fact. Maybe I should apply to the verge as a reviewer.

Ha. Don't feed the troll though.

OP, I agree with you. It is a technicality, but it does bug me too, for the same reason. This would also be a good place to mention another little thing that shouldn't bother me, but does, as a dmaxx owner. So many dmaxx owners are saying that they are posting from a XT1080 (that's not the droid maxx, that's the droid ultra). I feel like if dmaxx owners on android central don't know the difference, the maxx is doomed to obscurity. I know it shouldn't bother me because that's just what tapatalk writes for them based on what the phone's firmware reports as its model number. but just because the ultra and maxx use the same software, doesn't mean they are the same model (and in fact have 2 seperate model numbers as explained in the ultra/maxx's fcc filing).

Okay, just for you I've changed the default signature in Tapatalk on my Maxx...

For some reason no one like the maxx saying the x is designed better. Personally I don't find anything wrong with the maxx design
In fact, in every way that matters, the MAXX is better. Thinner, bigger screen, bigger battery and no onscreen buttons!

If the X had a bigger battery, I'd have bought that instead, for it's smaller size. Bigger isn't necessarily better. However, I am often in places where cell signals are weak, and managing the phone to get the battery to last all day can be problematic with many android phones. It's no longer an issue with the Maxx.

(That said, I love the Maxx. Great phone. I just don't get too worked up about what other people do or don't say about it. What's great for me about the phone may not be that important to others.)

Moto X: 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4 mm
DMAXX:137.5 x 71.2 x 8.5 mm

Volumetrically, the Droid MAXX is smaller, though I dunno about the curved back on the X, so maybe not. I do know phone width has a big impact on 'perceived size'. Either way, of the three Moto's, the Droid MAXX is absolutely the phone to have if your on Verizon. It may be the most expensive, but it's nearly impossible to kill throughout the day...just leave the radios on and go.

I don't care all that much about thickness (there is such a thing as too much, but neither the Maxx nor the X are), so volume doesn't mean much to me. When I'm holding it in my hand, there are many things that are hard/impossible to do with the Maxx. The X would be easier to use one handed.

I'd take a slightly thicker X with, say, a 2800 to 3000 mah battery over the Maxx, in a perfect world. I'll take the Maxx over the X as both exist, though.

LOL what ever you guys need to do to justify your purchase but I had a Maxx for a week and now I have the Moto X. The Maxx is an oversized and over weight phablet. Besides that it's just plain ugly with its old Droid out dated design. I promise that a ton of Maxx users are having big time buyers remorse and swapping for the Moto X. My Verizon dealer said that he had 20 plus returns so far before the 15 day period ended and a big percentage of those was the Kelvar separation issue. A lot of you guys that have that gap, right? Your Kelvar will start to fray soon like an old pair of Jeans. Then you will be mailing them back to Motorolla because after the 15 days Verizon wont talk to you about it. The Maxx is good for the 10% crowd that require a Phablet but for the rest, nope. I am very anxious to see how "KELAVARGAP-GATE" is going to play out.

EVERY single battery thread I look at for Moto X shows 12-14 hours on battery with 10%-12% of battery remaining. While that is very nice coming from a Galaxy Nexus, it would be a tremendous downgrade coming from the Maxx. Run along sonny, enjoy your plastic back and yes I will enjoy my kevlar back that shows NO fingerprints. Once the new iPhone comes out on the 9th everyone will say that the Moto X is a knock off iPhone mini or whatever they are going to call it. Meanwhile we will have a solidly built phone with a battery that I will never have to think about.

More importantly, at least in my opinion, Motorola has given us 4 phones that are essentially identical. It merely comes down to which form factor one likes. I won't lie, I kinda like the whole Moto Maker thing. I also like the Maxx's gigantic battery.

OK, I shouldn't be tweaked by this. I should be happy that the active display feature is getting some coverage. But I admit, it annoys me that Phil posts this nice entry on the active display feature on Android Central and only calls it a "Moto X" feature. Hell, the only time the word "Maxx" shows up in the entry and all the comments is when it's part of someone's username.

Yes, it's an X feature. AND A MAXX FEATURE. And an Ultra feature. And a Mini feature. It'd just be nice if write-ups like this didn't give the impression that only the X has it.

The Moto X gets the attention because that's the important release from Motorola this year. If enough people cared about the Droid releases, then I guess you'd see it mentioned more often around the tech media.

You won't ever get these numbers on an X. I currently have both and the X is going back. Nice phone but the battery kills on the maxx. No worry about battery ever again. And the wireless charging is nice.

Tis true, I grant. Motorola has a lot riding on the X.

Having a bigger screen (and thus lower ppi and larger footprint) and capacitive buttons are negatives to some. Obviously the battery is a plus, and dimensions are really a consideration of how it feels/handles. They're obviously similar devices, but the areas that they are different can easily be positives to some, while remaining drawbacks to others.

I can do 6-8 hours of screen time between charges. The Moto X has a form factor that blows the doors off of the Maxx and it doesn't feel like I am carrying a brick in my pocket. And to tell you the truth? Droids are about the ugliest phones made, the design is on it's last legs. The Maxx looks like a Phablet wrapped in a dirty sock. You know it, you are going through buyers remorse. Just take it back and get a real phone before your 15 days are up. That's what most Maxx owners are doing.

With the size comparison I posted, you have an odd definition of phablet.

I for one, greatly prefer it. Sturdy, no fingerprints, grippy, and full screen real-estate for my content.

Extremely doubtful.
Your Kelvar will start to fray soon like an old pair of Jeans.
Of course, any manufacturing issue is an issue that needs to be addressed, but the RAZR HD & HD MAXX had Kevlar, no such issue existed.
The Maxx is good for the 10% crowd that require a Phablet but for the rest, nope.
A phablet is the 6" phones some are putting out. A lot of phones are 5" or 5.2" (GS4, LG G2, etc)

I'm not a fan of the 720 display, I'd much rather have 1080, but off screen buttons are nothing but a benefit. I cannot comprehend how anyone would want buttons that take up valuable phone real estate.

Yeah, I get that, but I also like the ability to change, move, remove, replace, etc. the buttons and have them slide relative to the phone position, making me not have to worry about which way I'm holding it. I also like the way that on screen buttons facilitates the menu button on non-compliant apps, rather than requiring a long or double press this or black bar, etc.

I've been on Nexus for almost 2 years now with on screen buttons, and that was one of the major pushes for me to the X rather than the Maxx. I love the battery life, don't mind the form factor at all and they're so close it could have been easy to go either way. In the end it was buttons, $100 and my assumption that if the bootloader gets cracked, the dev community will be slightly stronger on the X side than the Droid side.

We probably like different flavors of ice cream too :)

I started off really loving the on screen buttons on the GNex until some ******* pointed out the screen burn in that is evident when you start watching full screen video like Netflix!

I like the idea of them, but in practice, I've grown to prefer off screen buttons all the way.

Photos or it didn't happen. I am sure you get no where near the screen time you claim.

I think the biggest problem is not your opinion but you arrogant uniformed attitude. You haven't stated any facts, just constantly stated you opinion as fact.

Ummm, go look in the battery life thread. That's kinda what the thread is for......battery life.

I think Moto X users on Verizon can hate our Maxx for another reason. I guarantee that the reason Verizon customers do not have the option to customize their new X is due to the Maxx, Ultra and Mini. Verizon wanted their exclusive product line to be successful. Why give options that may pull from their Flagship phones? Now, having the ability to give my phone a fancy colored back doesn't do anything for me but to each their own. Many would like that option. If I'm Big Red limiting the options only makes sense.
