Confirmed: Verizon Nexus One Cancelled

how do you figure this will be unlocked? it will only work on verizons cdma network. why would i want an unlocked phone that can only work on one network? its kind of like the unlocked version for tmobile, it only really works with tmobile.

I think that the real wording is "unsubsidized". But it is also unlocked - if there is another CDMA carrier that allows it, you should be able to activate it on that carrier. (Internationally, for example. Or on US Cellular, though it's possible that, like Verizon used to be, they will not allow you to activate ESNs that were not sold by them.)

And, if you have an existing month-to-month contract with VZW, you can activate on there without signing on to a new contract.

+1 to doogald.

Unlocked is usually in reference to GSM devices as they dont care if you swap out phones. CDMA networks use the exact same frequencies and actually roam on other CDMA networks (ie. Verizon and Sprint). VZW simply will not allow another carriers phone on there network because they dont want to spend the money to support a device they have not sold. As usual it is all about the benjamins.

The current Nexus one is a GSM device. Sprint uses CDMA which is a different type of radio to access the network. The other issue is that Sprint and Verizon do not allow devices on their network that are not registered to there network from the beginning. Verizon and Sprint actually roam on each others towers because they use the same frequencies, but they have both decided not to allow devices registered for the other to come onto the network. The only way to get the N1 for sprint will be if this policy changes and they allow the upcoming verizon N1 onto there network, or they make a deal with google to release their own N1. Im sure there will be bigger badder android devices will hit sprint that blow the N1 away.

Is it safe to start buying accessories for the verizon nexus one or will the hardware be any different? I would love to have everything here waiting for the phone to show up:)

It's not likely there will be much difference if anything, but I would still wait. That being said there are not many accessories out yet, and the stuff sold by google you can order with your nexus one.

so are you saying that a sprint phone can work on verizon and vice versa, it just has t be activated?

all frequencies between the two are compatible. but i have always heard that if it doesnt say sprint on it, sprint is not activating it. also vice versa with vzw. i havnt found one case of someone succesfully using the other carriers phone on their network. i dont see it happening.

thats a little far fetched. also it is $240 a year, $480 at the end of what would have been your two year contract. but that being said it does get you the phone for $49 at the end of two years. if verizon will discount monthly rates for unsubsidized, i would definitely do it without question. iwould do anything to reduce my monthly expenditures with the big red beast.

also thanks for posting link

Sadly, I called Verizon today...currently they do not offer any discounted plans for unsubsidized phones. So really not much incentive to purchase an Nexus One outright. Who knows this may change...but I guess I don't see any reason why VZW would.

i love Google and all and I would love to have the N1 especially since I'm waiting and waiting for the Eris 2.1 update... but to shell out $500 plus for a phone is not going to be me. and i'm not due for any upgrades.

I'm seriously considering jumping ship from Sprint to Verizon, and the Nexus One will play a huge part in that decision. Big Red can seal the deal by offering me some kind of discount to help offset the ETF I'll owe Sprint.

I agree. Who has $500 to drop on a device plus data charges in this day and age?

I would like one, but I am very content with my Droid (got on an update), and since I can clock this to 1.0 GHz, I see not advantage to the Nexus. It's thinner, but the Droid's screen is better, and (to me) feels more durable.

Do we think any pricing details will come out before it's actual release? I'm in a strange spot. My 30-day trial of my Droid expires on March 22ND... Literally the day before the (supposed) N1 release. I might really want to switch, but I wouldn't pay for the phone outright, I'd do it on a NE2 or nothing (unless I sold the Droid for it, I guess, but much more of a pain). I like the Droid, but I'm not using the hard keyboard at ALL, nor the D-pad, and I don't want to overclock or root the phone to make it faster, I'd rather just have the better processor. The N1 just seems like it'll be more relevant for longer, and that's important too. All in all, I'm pretty sold on the N1.

So do I... keep the Droid and try to resell it to buy the N1? Return the droid on 3/22, pay $35 to restock, and then go back the next day and get the N1? I don't mind doing that, but if there's no NE2 discount than I will have wasted $35 and I will have traded in my perfectly good phone for no reason.

I will gladly pay 500 dollars for a phone that is not locked down by a carrier. And I am not up for ne2 and I will buy the N1 on day 1 it comes out for vzw. Already brought the case and accessories for it.

yeah but this is a CDMA device therefore you would be locked down to Sprint or Verizon. What's the point?

I do want to jump from my Storm to the N1. I wonder how the Google check out process works for those of us that are still under contract and want to port over our phone number to the new device.

I hope that I don't have to pay the unlocked price. If that is the case, I'll wait until my contract ends in November, then switch.

If you don't buy/switch to another phone you shouldn't have to pay the $35 I just took back the Droid and the pre+ and I did not get charged, but I went back to my old winmo phone. Check the fine print because I think your good as long as you don't change to another phone within 3 days but the nexus isn't sold through Verizon so I don't even think that would apply

OK I'll double check, that's just what the guy at verizon told me. The nexus won't be sold through Verizon, but there's expected to be some subsidy for renewing contract right? As in the case with T-mo? I just can't be dishing out the $500... if that's the case I'm Droid all the way.
