Confused on the new fb chat

Ok so lets say im at the homescreen of my phone. I open facebook, click on chat, and then go back to the homescreen of my phone to do other things. Do I stay logged into fb chat?

In other words does fb chat run in the background?

I believe it does as I have received fb chat messages while my phone was in my pocket, if you go to chat and hit options you can log off chat so it won't. I have noticed a little battery lose since the fb update but then again I stay logged in.

Does anybody else have any idea?
