Considering a Motorola Xoom

I've been considering a tablet and have been trying to decide b/t an iPad and an Android tablet. What concerns me about the Android tablets is that I have to have a 3G enabled device, which narrows the field, but I am troubled by the crapware that is installed on the devices to begin with. When I looked at some of the permissions associated with apps I cannot remove, it worries me because it seems very invasive of my privacy. Are there any 3G enabled Android tablets that do not come with non-removable apps?

When I first got my xoom. There wasn't much bloatware on it. Once you root,if you decide to. You're able to remove whatever you see fit. Of course anything that doesn't effect your overall operating system. I have both an ipad and a xoom. I love my xoom. I came from a galaxy tab7 which was nice too. My ipad is primarily for my daughter because there are far more kid friendly games on it. As far as performance, go with the xoom. Dual core...its nice

I had an IPad and sold it so I could go with Android. Yes, Motorola has failed us with the 4G upgrade so far, but I'm still much happier with the Xoom. I've used it everyday since March and its never let me down. The Android system is much better than the IPad...

Evaluate your needs and just go with your decision.

Well part of the problem has been getting a straight answer as to what is actually on the device out of the box. Does anyone know where I can find this? One site says it is two games called Cordy and Spectral Souls. According to the Android market, the permissions on those are rather light. I could probably live with those two. I just don't know for sure if that is it. I don't want to waste my time with the Xoom if there are tons of other crap on there.

Just as an aside, one of the reasons why I don't own an Android phone is all the crap that my carrier, AT&T puts on them (all the others do too, I know). I'd much rather have one in theory than my iPhone but the permissions on Facebook, Blockbuster, etc. are scary. I fiercely resent that being a nonremovable app short of rooting.

Things may have changed, but as I recall, Verizon, didn't really add much of anything to my Xoom. I purchased it the first week it was available.

But, the sticking to me is the fact that Motorola claimed they would upgrade the Xoom to 4G LTE. They have failed their customers and have not followed through on that commitment. If I'm not mistaken, they are the only tablet now that doesn't have 4G LTE of the companies that manufacture them and provide them to Verizon.

PaulDroidR2D2 is correct. There is no non-removeable "bloatware" on the ZOOM. In fact, there is no bloatware, period. So your fierce resentment is unfounded in this case.

Scary? Can you be specific? What exactly are you talking about? What is scary? What permissions does one have to agree to for Facebook on Android which is not necessary on iPhone. Oh... I forgot... Apple doesn't bother to warn anyone about any permission issues. They are Apple and just do what they darn well please, without notifying anyone of anything. When apps crash, they just disappear and you have to start them again. They don't bother putting up a text box to say what happened.

And I get the fierce resentment thing. I was an iPhone user since the day after it was first released. I got a new iPhone every time they put a new one out. I fiercely resented the limitations Apple arbitrarily imposed on me. As soon as Android got a bit more polished from it's first release, I switched to the HTC Incredible and never looked back.

The main reason I decided on the xoom it is the most stock android expirience out there. There is no blootware.

Yep, let's just hope it isn't Blurred to death like the Droid 2 was.

Also all of us who purchased extended warranties are being told to go screw ourselves (they are paying us back the paid premiums) so if something happens even if it isn't our faults we have to pay the deductible.

Honeycomb is straight up vanilla android. Neither VZW, or Motorola had time to screw it up with their garbage before releasing it.

Tell that to Samsung, they already have TouchWiz on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Trust me Motoblur and Sense wont be fare behind. There is a misconception that because the XOOM has stock Android that therefore the Xoom 2 will be the same way. Well they thought the same thing about the Droid 2, and it was Blurred. Trust me unless the Xoom 2 ends up being the tablet launch device for ICS (and that is a distinct possibility given the timing) it will almost certainly have at least SOME Blur elements on it.

I actually like the version of Blur on the Bionic and Droid 2, definitely the best they have done so far but O am running LP on my Bionic and the Blur on the D3

I traded might opacity for a 3g(soon to be 4g) zoom yesterday and am really glad I did. I love this thing.
