Considering returning Galaxy S5 for the HTC One (M8)

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

TouchWiz is still dated. Plus add on the useless crap that you will only use once and forget and you are in for a bad experience.

Htc knew sense needed a refresh and they brought it in sense 5. Sense 6 only improves on it.

Ha, ha, the only way you are gonna settle this FOMO (Fear of missing out) is to get both of them. That's why I had M7 and S4. But this year, I am skipping Samsung and HTC for LG. Forget it.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

Well put! Kinda like going to the Republican Convention and asking which party is better.

Good to see some rational mature conversation on the subject. Both phones are great, they are both flagship phones with each having things that appeal to several people. If you have the ability to get both then by all means do that and in the 14 day return time hammer them both and see which one is better for YOU and not what anyone else says is better. How one person uses their phone will always be different then another person. The whole this phone is better than that phone is just nonsense. This is a M8 forum and most people here love their phone including myself so their will be a lot of bias here as it should be and the same will go in the S5 forum. Try the phones out use them as you would normally, don't go out of your way to try things with either phone that you wouldn't normally do because someone wrote a post or article saying this phone didn't do well in this situation or not. That situation may not ever occur for you. This is your money, your decision, don't let anyone influence you, only you know what is important to you as far as a smartphone. Good luck on your decision and feel free to come here for any tips on the M8.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

I was deadset on the S5 until I started reading reports about a quiet speaker, poor reception and an overhyped camera.

Now Im debating grabbing an M8 instead of the S5 but the main issue is that the camera is very important to me, I have taken nearly 2500 pictures with my S4 in the last year and I was satisfied with the quality, it wasn't the greatest in low light but it was still very usable.

The M8 worries me in this regard as the camera has received less than stellar reviews from all the major review sites while the S5 has been praised. There is also the design issues with the M8 which lead to an unnecessarily large device but I can deal with this as I have massive hands and can basically use a note 3 one handed.

The things I like about the M8 are the premium build, the BoomSound speakers and the great battrry life.
Not exactly a fan of Sense 6 but it might grow on me after a while, I also dislike the non removable battery.

Im finding it extremely difficult to decide at the moment and I think I may end up waiting for the OnePlus One and seeing how I like that device.

There's treads here showing both. Reviews can't always be trusted, especially when big advertisers like Samsung pay the bills for a lot of online publications. Look at the threads here that show pics from each cam. I think it would ease your concerns. The M8 cam actually has a lot of advantages over the S5 that the publicized reviews avoid mentioning.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

Ended up exchanging my s5 for the m8 today. Couldn't be happier. It's 10 times more snappier at least.

Flip a coin. Heads is the S5 and tails is the M8. Whichever one you want it to land on is the one you should get.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

I would say, do what you think is right.

I like the S5 and the M8, but I do think that if you do exchange it for an M8, you will NOT be disappointed.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

I was completely neutral and had no preference for either, I haven't even had an android phone since the first Motorola Droid. After using both for a couple hours, the M8 was the clear winner IMO.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

I have both and like them both. The S5 I have runs pretty smoothly so far. The chrome bling ring had to be covered up immediately, but the phone feels great in hand and the screen is great once you get rid of the TW cartoon look with Nova and some other tweaks. The M8 is hands down the only phone i truly think is on par with the iPhone in build quality and buttery smooth operation. Yes, the onscreen buttons suck (what a waste of screen space), but HTC seems to be listening so maybe the M9 does away with them.

May just keep them both. Time or the Z2 will tell.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

Has anyone used PdaNet+ with HTC One M8 (or Samsung Galaxy S5)? Does the WiFi feature work? How is it using USB or Bluetooth? I have heard HTC does not connect WiFi.

I like the on screen buttons but just don't like the space they take up lol. But Google has started optimizing this with apps where the buttons are transparent over the screen content. Or you could run a Rom or root and have the buttons disappear when needed.

Google actually pushes manufacturers for on screen buttons. With the right optimization you can have best of both worlds with transparent buttons. Not just a black bar.

Re: Considering returning GS5 for the M8

I agree, but it's annoying that I have to fix it.

I did it. Returned and got the M8. Thought I wouldn't like the gunmetal color but I actually like it. Phone is fast and snappy. My only gripe is the bloatware that I can't uninstall. Wtf do I need that toolbar spam thing?

That can be removed from the browser, if that is what you are referring to in the browser settings. Not to mention on the stock browser you can hide the notification bar to give you more screen real estate. :)

How are you finding the camera to be on the M8 compared to the S5? How about cell reception compared to the S5?

How's the phone doing so far?

Doing great so far. Very snappy, hasn't choked yet. Able to hold an lte signal at my apt whereas the S5 barely.

Reception is far better though I haven't taken any photos yet.
