Considering the X

So my contract is up later this month, and I'm considering the Droid X.

I just have a few simple questions.

The only other smart phone I had was the Moto Q, which was alright, aside from the BS keyboard. But I couldn't send/recieve texts over 160 characters, and I've noticed that on most(if not all) smart phones. Is that also the case with the droid X? Most of my simplistic conversations happen over text due to ease, and it's discreteness. Any "dumb phone" I've had was able to send/receive texts over 160 characters.

Also how about speed/power? When I first started looking at phones last month I was set on the HTC Incredible untill this sucker came out. Now I can't choose haha. If you've played with both, which seems to be faster? Other than that the only differences I can think of are the interfaces, HTC's and moto's "blur" which they refuse to call it as such.

I really haven't gotten to play with either yet, as most of my friends have iPhones(and there is no way I'm going back to At&t) or dumb phones. I also won't go back to the slider keyboard. I've had the Dare for 2 years now, and for being a dumb phone it's done me well. Battery lasts 4 days(yes four days O.o) but recently started getting slow and laggy.

SMS stands for short message service. Simply put, it is a method of communication that sends text between cell phones, or from a PC or handheld to a cell phone. The "short" part refers to the maximum size of the text messages: 160 characters (letters, numbers or symbols in the Latin alphabet). For other alphabets, such as Chinese, the maximum SMS size is 70 characters.
HowStuffWorks "How SMS Works"

Not sure how you were ever sending txt's longer than 160 characters - but doing so defeats the whole purpose of the first S in SMS. If you need to send something longer than 160 characters and have a smartphone - I'd just email it.

The X is faster than the DINC but the DINC is a really nice phone too. I'd go check both out side by side and go from there (even though I think you'll still like the X better!). :)

If you're used to 4 days of battery life - you'll be very disappointed with the X (or Incredible) - or most any other "smart phone". Most folks get a day (12-16 hrs) - some get 2 days and very few get more than that depending on usage (which is always high when you first get it and drops off later).

I am well aware that battery life will not be nearly as good. The Q didn't last very long either. Even for a dumb phone that is all screen, I'm very impressed at the battery on the Dare. And as I said, will be the only thing I will miss. :P

Also, I don't know, on verizon I can send as long of a text as I want essentially. I don't like using short hand such as "l8ter" and that sort of thing as I think it's a bit childish. But I guess I'll just get used to trying to making my messages smaller, hah.

I know what you mean because my old BB Tour stopped at 160 characters. But with the X, you don't have to worry about that or make messages smaller because the X will let you type as long a message as you want. It shows you how many characters you have left, then then how many text messages your entire message will be sent on.

I rarely use shorthand myself (e.g. prefer the full word than single letters and stuff) because it seems unprofessional (amongst acquaintances) and immature (amongst friends) to me.

Umm. I am pretty sure the system was breaking your texts apart and sending multiple messages. BlackBerry does this as well.

The Dx does have an official OEM batter that will add about 20% to your life and does NOT cause a bulge on the back.

If you talk on your phone much the I suggest the Dx. The Dinc just doesn't have a good talking experience. This is an issue with HTC in general. The Evo is the same.

Go to VZW store and play with the phones. Don't forget to check out the D2. Good luck.

@CarbonOak ... your Tour should have let you keep typing past 160 and just divided it up for you .. maybe it is a setting. BB has so many settings. haha.

Wait it out another month or so if you can, the X has lots of bugs and lag. New fascinate coming may be worth checking out or even the droid pro thats suppose to hit sometime in november..

I would go with the DX over the Incredible. Size alone should win out. The Incredible is not a bad phone but I've had my share of bad experiences with HTC devices.

There is nothing slow about the DX. I've had multiple apps running and music playing and everything still runs smoothly. You should really go to a vzw store and spend some time with both phones.

My vote is for the DX.

I'd go with the DX over the Dinc. Sense is better than Blur, but LauncherPro is far better than either of them. The screen on the DX is incredible, and really helps when you're browsing the web or typing on a virtual keyboard. The DX has Swype, which might just change the way you type on a phone (try it at the VZW store and see if you like it). The reception and battery life on the DX are slightly better than those on the Dinc. That said, if you find the phone too large, go with the Dinc or the D2 (or wait a month and a half for the Samsung Fascinate).

It really depends on your personal preference...

Do you want a phone with a Big Screen?

The inc and the DX are back to back, except for the different UI.

If you go with the DX, i suggest you download Launcher Pro, because it rapes on the droid.

This post summerizes the X perfectly.

Launcher Pro is perfect if you want an alternative interface, and Homeswitcher lets you go back and forth between them. All the icons packs and widgets make this phone a customizable dream. It can be as much or as little as you want it to be. I thought this would be a stopgap until VZW got the iPhone, but now I think this is a keeper.

Biggest reason I went with X over INC was the Inc felt 'cheap' while the X felt like I could throw it against a wall and it would survive. Well that and the million INC battery threads. :D

Well you post this question in the Droid X forum, you will get bias answers I think. Regardless the Droid X is still my vote :)

I know that I will get baised answers, and I think that was probably the point ;)

I was mainly wondering about the texting deal.

I do like the idea of the larger screen. Heck, I think the main reason I got the dare WAS because of the screen, nothing else really compared at that time when I got it aside from the Iphone, and as I said before I'd rather have a dumb phone on verizon, than anything on At&t, I dealt with them for a few years when they were still cingular, and I haven't seen where they have improved any.

For some reason it didn't and I checked the settings many, many times. It would just say "Field Full" every time I hit the 160 mark. Not that is matters now, but it was annoying at the time.

I'm in the same boat....so I'll share what I did at lunch today.

Just got back from a Verizon store. I had been wanting to get some hands on time with a D2 since I had already played with a DX. Spent quite a bit of time with both phones and really wanted to like the D2 so I could walk out of the store with it. I kept going back to the DX over and over again and being impressed by how much more "snappy" the use of the phone seemed to be. I still had problems with the on screen keyboard and can't really get used to it. As a result I'm thinking of holding off on the D2 and the DX in order to wait for the Pro and see what it offers.

Who the hell knows though. My Blackberry Tour is dying and I likely can't wait that long. If the Tour were to bite the dust I would definitely get the DX over the D2.

I know that probably doesn't help you, but thought I would offer it up anyway.

Good luck!

Shiner. The Pro rumor wise doesn't seem like its going to fit your bill. Its got a smaller screen and only a little bit better CPU and camera. Things to like is that even if its locked (a better chance it isn't then the X had but still unlikely) it will probably be Blurless. Looks to be more targeted at people who would be interested in the D Inc but looking for something with a better feel.

But keyboard wise its probably going to be very similar to the X just with a smaller (albeit not by much) screen to work with.

Well I'm switching over from the original storm! I looked at he storm 2 and then the droids they make the blackberrys look old.... loved my blackberry but they are just not stepping up.
