Constant freezing

I recently bought a C720 Chromebook to replace my current laptop (which is on the brink of falling apart) for taking notes in Uni lectures and for general browsing. Impressed with the battery life and the ease of the system (having been an Android user for the past 2 years).

However, having booted the Chromebook, connected to my wi-fi (Virgin Media), retrieved the 100GB offer on Google Drive, and done around 10-15 minutes of browsing (typical websites such as Twitter, Facebook and BBC, nothing too fancy), I found the screen froze up, becoming unresponsive to keyboard presses. The Chromebook would then restart Chrome, only to have it freeze again within 5-10 seconds. This cycle would go on and on until I performed a Powerwash, at which point I would start the cycle from the top of this paragraph.

I tried this on a friend's wi-fi (Virgin Media) and even the University wi-fi (Provider unknown), all having the exact same problem. The University IT Clinic suggested it might be a graphics card problem, and suggested I sent it back to Amazon for a replacement. This is what I did, only to receive the second Chromebook, boot it up, and encounter the same problem.

I've tried removing ALL extensions, numerous powerwashes, different wif-fi, and even a system restore onto an SD card earlier this morning, only to have it freeze and reboot Chrome after a few hours.
It should be noted that removing the extensions did improve the 'life' of the Chromebook, but I needed things like webcam and Google docs, so I had to re-add those. That crash happened overnight last night, so I don't know exactly how long it lasted, but could be as long as 12 hours.

At the moment, I am currently wondering about asking another friend to use their Google account on the Chromebook to see if it works for them, therefore isolating the problem to my account. If it fails on theirs, then I shall send the Chromebook back, otherwise I will make a new Google account and use that for Chromebook and have my Google Drive shared.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem, or does anyone have any suggestions of a (reasonably cheap, preferably under £250) Chromebook/Laptop to move to if the C720 proves to be a complete failure?

Thank you for your time.

Welcome to Android Central! When you say you tried other wi-fi networks, are you talking about public ones like Starbucks?

I've never encountered these issues on my C720. At this point, I wonder if one or some combination of your extensions is causing the instability, as you mentioned. Which extensions seem to be associated with the crashes? Is there a reason you need a Google Docs extension, since you can easily access Google Docs on the website?

Thank you for your reply

When I say 'other networks', I am mainly talking about the University wi-fi, which is a ultra-high security wi-fi. I have also tested this out on my own wi-fi and a friends, all 3 yielding the same results.

However, after creating a different Google account and signing in on that, I have had no problems whatsoever. This may just be pure luck, but I consider this too high a coincidence. I believe the problem may have been with a glitch on my Chrome account resulting in the mysterious creation of multiple bookmarks, and it is during the attempted loading of these that my Chromebook would freeze, reboot and freeze again.

Again, thank you for your quick reply, and I hope that my issue has been resolved!
