Each of my contacts have either NO icon one icon or two icons next to them. This icons looks like a "phone" and a Google "G".

Often, there is a duplicate name in my contacts - one with no icon and one with either just the Google icon or both the Google and Phone icons.

What is the significance of these icons??

thanks,
bert

They are most likely telling you which account the contacts are from--the G meaning Gmail and the phone meaning the Phone Account. Contacts in the Phone Account aren't automatically synced to Google, so in general, I recommend that people not enter contacts into this account unless you need to sync with Microsoft Outlook. The only way Phone Account contacts can be synced is typically using 3rd party software, and this is how you can sync contacts with something like Microsoft Outlook.

The contacts that have both icons are therefore in both accounts, and have presumably been joined together by your phone for convenience. Not sure about the contacts that have no icon--these might be from Facebook or Yahoo, or other accounts that you may have opted to sync contacts with. Perhaps your phone just doesn't have an icon for those accounts.

Thanks B.Diddy,

I don't have a Gmail account, but I do have a program (GSyncIt) on my Windows desktop that syncs my contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes with "Google" - which has been a mystery, as I never knew WHERE in Google the contacts were kept, since Google Calendar doesn't have contacts in it.

Bert, if you signed in to your phone and download apps for it..... You have a Gmail account now. I don't think you can down load apps from the Play store without a Google account

Google will force you sign up for it in way or another.

You should be able to log into your Google account by going to any Google page and signing in. If you've never set up a Gmail account, then you probably associated some other email account with Google. You can access your Google Contacts page by going to www-dot-google-dot-com/contacts (replace the "dot" with an actual period--if I were to actually spell it out, the forum software will replace it with a link that says "Google Contacts," and you won't be able to see the actual URL easily).

Well, I went to GMail and it appears I do have a Gmail account, although it also appeared as if it had never been initialized. But, It did solve the question of where my contacts were going - they were all in Gmail - well, almost all.

The email contacts that I created in Outlook are being propagated by gSyncIt on my desktop to Gmail, which in turn is propagated to my phone. But, contacts created on my phone have no icon next to them and aren't being propagated UP to Gmail, and consequently, up to Outlook.

Does anyone know what I have to do to contacts that I create on my phone so they'll be propagated to gmail??

thanks,
bert

When you create a contact on your phone, it should ask you which account you want to create it in, or there should be an option for you to select an account. Make sure it's your Google account.

when I create a new contact, I am asked for the account, but when contacts were transfered from my iPhone (Verizon did the transfer), many contacts were orphaned with no account. The only way I can get these "corrected" is to recreate a new contact and delete the old one.

Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem. Adding a contact to my phone does not "connect" it to gmail....AND it does not ask me what account I want to create it in....it goes straight to the phone account and no little blue G. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. thanks for any help - a bit frustrating.

You may just not be displaying them. Check here: Contacts button - - > left hard button on your phone - - > Contacts to display

When adding a contact, if you want it in your Google account, you will need to select Google at the top. It not it may default to save it to the device
