I have an updated OnePlus 5t oxygenOS 5.1.5 as of 9/1/2018. When I go into an mms group message, no name shows up next to the messages, so I have no idea which person in the group chat is saying what.

I imported my contacts over via a .vcf file imported in by the contacts app because I didn't want to link my previous Google account to this phone. All my contacts are here, the only problem is the names not showing up in group messages.

I have gone into settings and made sure messages are allowed to access contacts. I have tried changing contacts numbers in different ways (like taking away all "-" between numbers, adding 1’s before phone numbers and taking them away. Also tried restarting phone and force stopping both the contacts and messages apps.

Hello, just fixed this problem which arose when I switched to a new pixel 2 xl. Just go to Google Play, my apps, select messages app and uninstall the app. (It won't be uninstalled, only the update will be). Click open app. And voila! You see the names again. You can update the app again from play store without losing the names. Cheers!

The fix posted here doesn't work. The problem is inherent to Google's Messaging app and requires a reworking of their code to fix. My messages are not linking to my Contacts for all messages using shortcodes. This problem is platform-wide as near as I can tell from online posts in Google community forums.
