Contacts I create in mobile app don't appear in Google contacts desktop

Yesterday I noticed that contacts I create on my LG G4 (running marshmallow) are not syncing to the contacts on my Google account. Any advice?

I use my Google account for contacts, but have to be careful what I tweak because AT&T's deprecated addressbook app can't be fully uninstalled and lingers beneath the surface, sometimes rearing its ugly head.

I'm now seeing that new contacts won't sync in either direction. It's still a problem, but a slightly different one.

My apologies for the misleading thread title -- I'd delete the thread in order to rename it, but that doesn't appear to be possible.
