Contacts, icons - what does the small number "2" in some of them mean?

I only use my phone to do texts. On my "Contacts" screen, a lot of the icons for the contacts have a small number "2" within them. What does this signify?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Is it a dual SIM phone? If so, it may mean that those contacts are saved to the 2nd SIM card.

Dual sim but only got 1 sim card I have a little telephone at the top of my phone with number 2 but only one contact cant send me any messages

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Are you certain your SIM card is inserted in the SIM1 slot? That's usually the preferred slot if you only have one card -- many dual SIM phones have more limited function with the SIM2 slot.
