Contacts- undoing whatever Verizon did

Just traded in my droid for an Eris (much happier with the Eris!), but at the Verizon store, they "transferred everything" while transferring my contacts. Now I have 1200 contacts instead of ~70, basically everything stored in Gmail (everyone I've ever emailed) is a contact now, not sure how they did this. When I first logged into my Droid, just the right contacts showed up, not like this.

Whats the best way to get rid of all these extra contacts, other than going into gmail and manually deleting over a thousand email address? I'm not opposed to starting over!

Thanks
Rob

go into the contacts, then hit options. Choose Only contacts with phones for display options. That way it will not show all of those email addresses.
