Contract or Full Price?

so i pretty much have decided to let go of my unlimited data for the 6gb one for the same price. i hardly ever use 1.5gb let alone 6gb. and now that i can no longer use foxfi, there's really no way i'll ever use 6gb. i was using foxfi for when my home internet goes down. i will not root the phone so that root workaround is not an option for me. this would save me about $300 on a phone if i go on contract. i figured why pay $300 for something i don't ever use. then again, if i do pay full price right now, i can get another phone whenever i want. i know i WILL want another phone come next year when they release a beefed up droid maxx with better camera! >_> (is that hoping too much? lol) i have never lasted over a year on any phone. this razr maxx i have right now is the longest i've use the same phone because it's the only one that hasn't tried my patience because it lasts me through the day. so basically i'm paying $300 to keep the option of being able to get a new phone whenever i want. is that worth it? was thinking of that edge program but it's basically like buying the phone full price but i also lose my unlimited data (which i don't ever use fully).

thanks for opinions.

Go with the edge plan....I got the phone plus traded in an older bionic...received 100.00 for it. I end up with 6gb of data and my phone bill is only 20 more a month.
If in a year I want to switch phones I can..

You can use verizon's hot spot if you need to tether... Just watch your usage. I now use wi-fi more then when i had unlimited..(DUH).
I never stream movies anyway, only tethered the internet for biz instead of using the hotel rooms wifi.

PS; This phone rocks...you will not be disappointed.

problem i have with the edge program is that you can't keep the phone once you want a new one. you basically pay for 75% of the phone, but you have to give it back to them in order to get a new one. at least if i buy the phone full retail (edge program is full retail anyway), i can always sell the phone for maybe $300 in a year? or maybe $200? or is that being too optimistic on the price? figured that way i can at least get back some of the cost and put it towards a new one.

Not necessarily true. When you want to get a new phone, you can choose to pay off the full amount of your Droid MAXX and then be free and clear of any obligation towards that phone. You can pay off the remaining full price of the phone anytime you wish and no longer be obligated. You would not be required to turn the phone back in to Verizon if you paid it off, and then you are free to get another phone with the Edge program while keeping your MAXX and doing whatever you want with it. Since there are no interest or finance charges to using the Edge, you don't pay any extra using the Edge and fully paying the MAXX off at a later date verses paying full price for the MAXX on day 1.

If you wish to return the phone to Verizon for an upgrade, you would only have to pay 50% of the MAXX ($250), not 75% as you stated. So even then, paying only $250 to be able to use a MAXX for 6 to 12 months and then trade it in for a new phone (with no upgrade fee) is still a pretty good deal for you, considering how long you keep phones.

Depending on which phone you get, buying full price or "renting" on Edge comes out to be about the same. With Edge, you avoid the hassle of reselling online and all that, but you do not get to keep the device as you said, unless you pay the full price anyway. Depending on releases of devices, you may actually pay more than 50% of the device depending on when you choose to swap out the phone.

When you buy full price, I mean, a year later the Razr Maxx HD is still selling for around $300. Time will tell what will happen to the Droid Maxx, but with an off contract price of $500, selling in a year for $250-300, not horrible.

And then your third option of signing a contract - If you don't care about being in a contract, then it's probably the cheapest route to go. Every 2 years you get a discount on a device, and then you can just buy a new phone outright whenever you want anyway. You might as well take advantage of that subsidized pricing every two years, as you aren't saving anything buy NOT being in a contract. But of course, if you are concerned about payments to Verizon or possibly switching in the future (due to moving or something), then you might be best served buying going month to month.

was thinking of that contract too but i know another update to this phone will be coming in maybe less than a year and i'd like to probably not be locked in contract until a maxx that has a great camera is released lol.

i'm just wondering though if this means i can go back on contract now and get on edge program while on contract:

"Does the Verizon Edge program require a contract?

Yes, you must have a service agreement at the time you enter your 24-month Verizon Edge Agreement. However, a long-term service agreement isn?t required."

The Edge program and buying a phone with discount are mutually exclusive. The wording that you quoted is confusing.

Using the Edge program means you are financially obligated to the phone itself, not obligated to stay with Verizon service for 2 years. Once you are on Edge, you must do one of three things : 1. Pay your phone's monthly installment for 24 months, or 2. Pay monthly installments and at any time pay for the remainder full price of the phone, then you are free and clear of any obligation, or 3. Make regular installments and pay off at least half the price of the phone and then return the phone to Verizon for an upgrade.

This is one of the few equipment finance/rental type programs that comes close to making sense. I get a new phone about every year. At $500 - $600 per phone, after 1 year sell it on my own for 250-300 tops, then buy a new phone - it's costing me about 250-300 every year. The exact same amount if I pay monthly payments totalling 50% of the phones cost over a years time.

It does make some sense, but it is frustrating that you still have to pay the subsidy baked in to your monthly bill , so in effect you are paying for the phone twice. Several of the blogs have broken this down. I am not sure what direction I will take if I am forced to choose.

Yeah, it's frustrating how much money Verizon is making from EDGE, but for those with Unlimited, they're paying full price for a phone anyway. Why not just spread it out over two years instead of paying up front?

I think for us who buy new phones every year, it comes out to be around the same. I personally like to keep my "old" phones around as spares for friends/family or just to use for a month if a new ROM comes out that I want to play with. But then again, I'm also on a large family plan with 4 lines that don't need upgrades (or I will just give them my previous device), so I am able to upgrade yearly due to that.

If you want to wait for a newer device before locking in two years, I'd still saying buying the Maxx for $500 is worth it for now. I would wait to jump on Edge when a new device comes out in two years with a $650 price tag on it. $500 for the Maxx is quite good, I think.

yea it's what i'm thinking. that way i get to keep my data while still basically paying the same as edge program, just shorter time lol.

i'm alittle shocked its $499 off contract now.. and thats only what 2 months ago it was released ? I paid $700 on release day.. I think im going to wait 3 months after every major release.. its just obvious thats what everyone should do..

Just requires patience to do that, unfortunately.

Prior to the Droid Maxx announcement, I was on the cusp of picking up a used RAZR Maxx HD, so I snapped up the Droid Maxx on day two or three (due to inventory shortages). It's a little easier to deal with for me, however, since I bought subsidized. I would be much more upset if I were in your position.
