Contract or Full Price?

I went with the 2 year contract. I'm worried about how the phone will be in two years from and if they'll still be upgrading it. My Bionic got it's last and final update in April and that's about 1 yr and 7 months after it's release date. That's not good. I hope the Maxx isn't the same way. The Verizon Edge program is way too expensive. This article breaks down the pricing (it's for the iphone, but still): The Verizon Wireless Edge Early Upgrade Program Is A Ripoff, Here's Why.

Actually, I think that's excellent. It's received two OS updates (ICS and JB) and is on the current Android version (Jellybean), and I believe it had two Gingerbread patch updates as well. Not many contract phones receive two Android named version updates. It's now past two years since release; most Bionic users are probably upgraded to something else. It'll be interesting to see if the new Google Motorola continues to update the models that can run KitKat (Bionic, Razr, Razr HD) - assuming, of course, they can run these updates. However, it was after Google took over that the JB updates were prepared and made for those old Motorola phones, so I think that's a good sign.

I guess we'll see...

So you think they'll still upgrade the Maxx in two years from now?

I don't know. What I think will happen is that on August 20, 2015, the Maxx will have been updated to the latest named android version within the last 6 months, whatever that will be. Probably the "L" version, as Google seems to be releasing new named versions in the second half of every year.

That's what I think will happen. That said, I try to buy phones thinking how comfortable I'll be if the phone never gets an update. My last phone didn't. It was a little long in the tooth after two years, but it's still working fine now, I'd I need to activate it.

They've stopped updating the RAZR Maxx and that came out in Jan 2012. That makes me nervous since this phone is from the same family.

Who said they've stopped updating it? [edit - Oops, just checked - the Razr Maxx is confirmed to stay on jelly bean. Still, it received two full OS updates since release.]

This phone is not from the same family. The Razr ran on a TI OMAP processor. This is on the same snapdragon chipset as the Moto X. The Razr was designed by the old motorola; Google bought Motorola after the Razr came out and this X series of phones are the first wholly designed by the Google - owned company, whose management insists that they will keep supporting their phones.
