Control buttons malfunctions?

When my Tab s 8.4 is in the case, at random times, the screen will go dark and then the control buttons at the bottom of the tablet will no longer function. Also, the clock in the upper right-hand corner disappears. As far as I can tell, this only occurs while it is in the case; because, when I remove the tablet from the case everything returns to normal. Does anyone know if this is some sort or malfunction, or if there is a setting that will prevent it from happening.

Welcome to Android Central! Does the case have a flipcover that automatically turns the screen off when it's closed? If so, the magnet in the cover that triggers the smartcover sensor (which turns the screen off) might be inadvertently triggering it again if you're folding the cover behind the tablet. A good cover shouldn't do this, but sometimes, the magnet they embed is too strong.
