Converting Video for HTC Evo

Has anyone nailed down 'ideal' settings for video conversion for our Evos? For converting videos to my Zune, Ipod and G1 I first used DVD Decrypter then Videora. I used these because they were free and worked well but DVD Decrypter is no longer available. I don't mind investing/supporting software developers so I am considering purchasing software that will allow me to rip my dvds for my Evo. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
b

Here's the easiest.

Use DVD43 to decrypt the DVD,
In HandBrake choose the iPhone/iPod Touch preset and change the resolution to "optimal for source".

It's about as good as anything else. The Evo is touchy about how the movie is encoded apparently. Lots of guys at another forum are having problems getting HanDbrake movies on the Evo.

If your just watching on the Evo it's pretty forgiving as far as the video quality. I've seen no difference between FFmpeg and H.264 that's notice on the computer monitor.

mp4

i had some mp4 movies on my Archos - don't remember what I used to encode them - just copied them to the card on the EVO and works like a champ. Pretty good quality. Three movies, 126 pictures of varying resolutions, 12 ring tones, the sample pics and I have just over 11 gig of room left on 16 gig card. Card also has all the default stuff that came on the original card

DVDFab 7 has file to mobile, dvd and blu ray to mobile. I like it better than handbake. Handbreak kept crashing one of my digital copies and it was some error protection. DVDFab 7 bypassed it and quality was a lot better than handbrake, and faster imo.

I manually put mine in the 'Video' file folder.

I have a digital copy of The Dark Knight and it downloaded the copy via Itunes. After it was downloaded I tried putting it into handbrake and kept getting errors. Any ideas/suggestions?

i saw your post on another thread, does this work with your digital copys? also did you have to buy the full version?

Have you used the dvd to mobile feature yet? i will try this as soon as i get home. can't wait

Yes it worked on my digital copies. The only thing they give free is the hd decrypter which is a lot better than many free ones I've tried. You get 30 days free trial, but during the trial zero watermarks. So I've rip and converted a lot of my stuff already lol. A free converter I use is format factory, takes a bit of a longer time but doesn't give me errors.

Since it worked so well, I'm going to purchase it once my trial is up. Best one I've used so far and fast.

I used handbrake and it's worked well but I haven't really found optimal settings yet. If you do convert movies to fit the native resolution they will be large files, just an FYI.

im confused lol,

if i understand correctly, you can convert the .wmv files w/ this program (dvdFab 7)?

Also what is a watermark?

Also what is format factory? esentially the same as fab7? just wondering...

A watermark is a graphic that goes across the video. Usually it says something like "This video was created using SomeRandomVideoConverter" Its generally in a corner somewhere, so it doesnt really hinder the viewing of the movie, but it can be annoying.

gotcha so like a logo on the screen when you play a video. so confusing lol. i'll see what happens when i get home and try it, i have a bunch of digital copies was upset i couldn't play them on the evo.

Has anyone tried doubletwist's ability to convert and import movies? I've been meaning to give it a spin but just haven't had the chance.

Yes it will convert wmv. I was upset too till I found that program. I was using dvd decrypter (a free dvd ripper), but it errors out A LOT on disney dvds, damn you disney! I just like dvdfab because it compresses after rips. I like that they let you buy what you want or need, but I wish the prices were a tad lower :< Still the free trial is awesome, a lot of free trials put an annoying logo and a lot are smack in the middle of the movie.

Format factory is another free app for conversion. I've been using it for awhile now, does what it's suppose to, but takes awhile to process.

Yes I have. It's slow, freezes my pc quiet a few times now and did not convert my digital copies. The app player on the android has annoyed me to no end too!

thanks that answers alot of my questions!!! ;)

can't wait to get home now lol

Here's how they look after converting with dvdfab. The sound quality is excellent, I set my volume settings on the conversion option to 200% and the speakers were a lot louder than I gave it credit for. Other converters I used it made the audio too low. I'd record a video to show you if I could, but I doubt it will pick up the quality. Screen shots don't do the evo justice they look much crispier and sharper in person.

^ That's what I think of Disney's digital copies! I couldn't get it to work on anything (including wm player) till I converted it.

P.S. No more black borders :D
