Convince me to get a LG G4 instead of a Galaxy S6.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new smartphone, but for the life of me, I can't decide between the LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6.

With the samsung, wireless charging and fingerprint scanners are not a necessity for me, but it does add to the value and future proof the phone. I've tried out the S6 in a verizon store and I must say that I feel the screen is better on the S6 compared to the G4. The viewing angles on the S6 are wider and video performance seems a little bit more crisp. In regards to the camera, both seem good enough for my needs. As for the user interface, I wasn't really impressed with the G4 because I'm not used to it. (I'm coming from HTC Rezound running on sense). The samsung seemed more palatable, but only because my brother has a Galaxy S4 and I use his sometimes.

Now, this may make me seem real noobish but the first time I went to verizon to get a feel for the phones, I thought the LG G4 didn't have power or volume buttons. My second trip back to the store and I realized they are on the back. A lot of people praise this. Can anyone give me their own feedback on this button placement. Do you get used to it and is it advantageous.

Overall, I feel that both phones are definitely flagship devices that should be in everybody's consideration for current smartphones. I tend to feel that the S6 is the more premium device, but the 64GB version that I want is $150 more than the G4. Now, I will be getting a $150 coupon for new edge customers so that'll cancel some of the cost. But, is the G4 the better value considering I can use a microSD slot and removable battery when the time comes?

Here is the cost (I will be on the edge program):

Lg G4 Black Leather- $549-$150(coupon) = $400

Samsung Galaxy S6 64Gb - $699 - $150(coupon) = $550

I'd like to hear some people's experiences and opinion on this matter. Should I go for the LG G4? I would like to save some money but I do have a good coupon. Or do some of you think the G4 is better than the S6?

Having both, (G4 and S6 Edge) if I could only have one, it would be the s6. The s6 has a better display, brighter and more viewing angles. That being said, I really like my G4. It is pretty much a better version of my nexus 5 in every way.

I have a G4. I'm loving it so far.

I can give you 3 good reasons why you might want to consider it.

Camera - The LG G4 has a similar camera performance-wise and specs-wise to the Galaxy S6, but it has a slightly wider f1.8 aperture that allows more light in, allowing for superior low-light performance. Furthermore, the G4's Manual Mode offers manual shutter speed control and a few other goodies not currently found on the S6's Pro Mode but is slated to come in a future software update, which will also bring RAW support, something the G4 already has. When the update will arrive is unknown at this point.

Ergonomics - The G4 is simply better to hold, assuming you have hands the same size as mine. It is wider than the S6, so people with smaller hands than mine will disagree, but the curved back of the G4 along with the slight vertical G Flex-like curve makes this phone easier to hold than the S6, and feels better than the flat back of the S6. The leather backs also help improve grip and the back buttons are placed in the best possible spot for a large phone like the G4. The back buttons are easy to operate, easy to feel for and make the phone a lot easier to use than phones with conventional button placements, at least in my experience.

User-replaceable battery and microSD expansion - This is probably the biggest reason why anyone would pick the G4 over the S6. The S6 omitted the 2 things that many Samsung fans really liked. Now that both are gone, the G4 is currently the only flagship to have both. The advantages are obvious. With the G4, you can carry a spare battery so if your phone dies, you can swap out the battery and have a full charge in seconds. It also increases the lifespan of the device as when the battery is degraded, you can buy another battery and have a fully-working phone again. microSD expansion allows you to store more media files like movies, music and photos without compromising on internal storage space for your apps. If you take a lot of RAW photos, the expansion slot is very appealing as RAW files take up a lot more space than compressed JPG files. A general rule-of-thumb is that you put your media files solely on your SD card and install your apps on internal storage as it performs better when it is installed there.

I hope my reasons help. Please, do try out the G4 before you get the S6. It really is one amazing phone and many of us who have one really love using it.

Make up your own mind instead of listening from fanboys to convince you. It's not that hard to compare the two.

Everyone seems to have chimed in with their impressions. I'm assuming you have this thread over in the Galaxy S6 forums too, right? It comes down to which one feels right to you. They are both flagship devices and are both top of the line phones. You can't go wrong with either.

  • IU - My wife LOVES Samsung's IU. So much so that I couldn't get her to keep the LG G2 and ended up having to buy her a used S5. So, if you are not happy with LG's UI, I'd say get the S6. I love the LG UI and have no problems with it.
  • Battery - I cannot say anything other than what I've heard. I've heard the S6 does not last all day. Looking at the size, I know it wouldn't last me a day. The G4 lasts at least a day maybe more.
  • Screen - 5.1 vs 5.5 doesn't seem like a lot, but for my older eyes it is. Especially when the two phones are almost the same size. LG wins with the screen size.

Ultimately it's up to you. Good Luck

I've also been at that thread trying to convince the OP why they should get the S6 /jk

I still have both the G4 and S6 Edge. I'll be getting rid of one shortly. If Samsung releases the fabled S6 Edge Plus, I'd buy that in a heartbeat. I'll also consider the Note 5 when it arrives.

2 things that the G4 has that keeps me coming back:
Knock Code
Customizable Front Touch buttons with QuickMemo. I can have up to 5 useful buttons on screen at all times and I can place them in whatever order I like.

I don't know what you are looking for in a phone for yourself but the specs are out there for all to see, the phones are pretty much equal and it's mainly the features that separate them.

I currently have the S6e. Fantastic device, performance is great and moving through the UI is super smooth. As i continue to use it as my daily driver i have found two major gripes.

1) Cell reception; I've been in the same office for 6 years now and have cycled through many-a-smartphones and never once had a cell reception issues in my office until i got the S6e. I don't know if its my device specifically or if its a wide spread S6e issue.

2) Stand-by; Stand by time on my S6e is pretty bad, its actually the first time in years that I've had a device where i have to worry about it dying in the middle of the night (even if it has 60% before i pass out). Again not sure if its my device or if its just a general issue.

I'm really reaching out to owners of both the G4 and the S6e... Does the G4 outperform the S6e in reception and stand-by? If so that might seriously tip the scale. It's getting old having to walk out of my office every time i get a call on my cell and even more irritating when i wake up and realize the sun is a bit higher than i'm used to.

I'd also like to note that I have had a total of three S6e devices due to early screen rotation issues and all three experienced the same reception and stand by issues. Coincidence? maybe... weirder things have definitely happened. All in all I do not want to give up the S6e because it performs so well and i love the fingerprint scanner but the two gripes are pretty big issues for a power user.

Can't say much about cell reception because I think that has a lot to do with your carrier and location. I live in a big city and get very good reception through T-Mobile.

The G4 is great with standby in my experience. I typically unplug my device before I go to bed so it starts at 100%. I will wake up 7 hrs later and it will still be at 98% to 100%(!). I think the worse that I've seen is when it dropped 8% overnight, but that only happened once so far.

The G4's battery calibration is such that they keep displaying 100% for an abnormally-long time. That first "1%" might actually be 5%, to make up a number, if you think in terms of runtime minutes per % of battery. Maybe you need the screen on for 15 minutes to drop to 99%. Then maybe you drop 1% every 5 minutes, after that.

So, for a better test of overnight standby performance, etc, try starting at maybe 98% or below. Something where you're in a more-linear range of the battery display. Then check how much the battery % drops overnight.

Unless they re-calibrate the battery display, starting from 100% makes things look unrealistically good.

Your standby issue can be resolved by doing 2 things on your s6.

1..restrict background syncing in the settings on apps you can manually sync as needed.

2..Turn off Google history location

Also there is a very long thread on the s6 forum that has some really good tips for maximizing your battery life...

My S6 variant the Active with it's 3500 battery was pretty bad at first and doing these 2 things and a soft restart after a couple of days has resulted in making my phone excellent for standby and screen on time.

The g4 has the best standby time of a any phone I have ever used out of the box, but you can improve yours greatly by tweaking the settings.

Call reception is a coin toss... I have had really crappy luck with most Samsung phones and had to root and change radios, but lucked out this time around with the AT&T s6 Active.. My g4 had a bad antenna in it, but until it failed was really good too. I know people who have the other carriers and have issues with it at times and from what I know it is more of a software issue with the carriers than a actual hardware issue. AT&T seems to have gotten it right with Samsung for a change.

Both are great phones though and know that it was a hard thing to let my g4 go back. I'm happy now that I have gotten my Active all set up and can say that it is extremely fast and fluid too but is polar opposites in how they look.

This is my answer as well. I have used both (using the G4 right now) and both are seriously great phones. You aren't really losing. For me the deciding factor was the G4 has a 5.5 inch screen and I watch a lot of media.

My reason for going with G3 & G4 is more ridiculous. LOL.

I sold my S6 because I couldn't stand and figure out why I'm getting UNKNOWN artist, album cover on some of my collection. :(
