Cooking with the D3 (this thing runs hot!)

Warm, hot, it's subjective - but I was very surprised how warm/hot my Droid 3 runs.

There is nothing about dual core that should generate a lot more heat. My iPad is cool to the touch, for example.

It is possible that I have a bad unit.

Actually dial core phones should produce LESS heat not more (dual core = processor not working as hard) but yes I have notices the same thing. This phone is VERY hot at times. Not burn your skin hot but hotter than I have ever seen before. Giving it a few days to see what happens.

EDIT: I actually never had this issue with either my Moto Droid or D2G. Not sure what's going on.

FYI, if you call Vzw, they can call up their "known issues database" on several phones. Overheating was a very common problem during the early days of the DG2. Based on your experience, I think it is possible the prob got solved over time. I have seen other posters who had the exact same experience as you either way.

My D3 is not at the level of the DG2, but it is fairly warm.

Not to beat this thing to death, but I just did talk to a support type at the VZW store who seemed to really know his stuff. He was pretty clear that this heat issue is a phone design thing and not a bad unit. He admitted that he heard frequent complaints about the Motorola phones because they tend to be on the warm side but definitely emphasized that it just the way the phone runs.

I have noticed my D3 soing this the last couple days. I have had my d3 for about 2 weeks now. Up until a few days ago, the phone was doing great. About 2 days ago my battery died after 3 hours. I just figured it was because I was in a new building where there is no cell service, figured it drained the battery trying to find cell service. But now everyday it starts getting really hot on the back by the processor and the battery keeps dying really quick. I have not changed any settings nor have I installed any new apps.
my wife has the same phone and hers doesn't get hot at all. I don't understand what is going on.
I have tried the advanced task killer since to see if that helps, but it doesn't.
when I am using the phone for talk or data, it never gets hot. It's only every now and then that it just gets really really hot then starts killing the battery.

I noticed that my Droid3 was running unusually hot today. I closed some running apps and it cooled down pretty quickly. The apps that ran hot were WABCRadio, and AirKast app, and Pandora. I also noticed that running on WiFi tends to make this run hot as well, not mention causing a rapid drain on the battery.

Just turn off any apps that you are not using and it will run cooler and lengthen your battery charge.

The only time my phone runs hot is when I'm playing Gun Bros. It doesn't get hot enough to cook a steak on though lol. While playing Gun Bros once, I played continuously for like 30 minutes then all hell broke loose. It wouldn't let me fire downward anymore forcing me to end the session. When I went back to the home screen, it was lagging and acting stupid, forcing me to do a reboot. Luckily for me, after the reboot all was well.
