It's going to be my first nexus device. Sorry, you've probably answered some of these before.

1. Camera. What's the extent of manual control I have. I'm a serious photographer, but I don't like carrying cameras with me when I visit places with my gf. Can I change exposure, aperture and shutter speed?

2. Does an unlocked bootloader allow me to edit my hosts file for system wide ad blocking? Do I have to load a custom ROM to do this? What's the easiest way to edit my hosts file on this device without breaking anything?

3. I like the look of the official Google case. Why isn't anyone buying it?

I cant provide a good answer to 1 and 2 but for 3 I have a Google Nexus case and it is excellent in my opinion. There are many others who have bought it as well just from reading different threads and posts

1. Very little. Not sure what phone you're coming from, but this likely has less options. If you currently have an Android, I'd suggest trying out some third-party apps and seeing if any of them have the options you want. Also, if you have an Android currently, download "Google Camera" from the Play Store. That's what you'll have on the 6P.

Considering the fact that I've been waiting to buy the Nexus case because it's sold out, I'd say that plenty of people are buying it.

Thanks. Just downloaded it. I'm coming from a 2014 Moto X. Google Camera let's me change the exposure but honestly that UI is badly designed. Why can't I just drag the screen for exposure? Why require a menu for it? Would've expected more from Google. Moto's exposure compensation is better.

Anyway thanks. That was disappointing, but I'm guessing the improved image quality will make up for it.

I have the official Google case and its definitely nice, to my surprise the back has this suede feel to it, people probably aren't buying it because it's around 40$

I don't need many setting with my camera, but I'm even pretty disappointed. I had to spend 20 minutes in Macrodroid just to set up some rules to get the camera shutter sound off.

I do like the burst shots as it works much quicker than it did on my Samsung.

Oh okay. I thought there was something wrong with it or something.

Ugh I hate my device lust. My Moto X is fine, just the image quality is ***. I'm trying to justify this 6P just for the camera.

I had both the 2013 and 2014 Moto X, so I know how you feel. I convinced myself that the S6 was the best phone ever just so I could have a good camera. I wouldn't say I regret buying the S6, but its definitely not all it was cracked up to be. Even with a debloated ROM, it still lags frequently. My Nexus 6P should be on my doorstep tomorrow. The 6P is a huge step up from the Nexus, so I would do it.

1. At this point there's not really anything in the way of what you're looking for for that kind of advanced use that I know of. This phone's camera was pretty much targeted towards casual users to take really nice photos with a point and click.

2. Not sure, I exited the root and ROM scene around 2012

3. I can only speak for myself but I'm totally into clear cases now that today's current flagships look so nice so that's why I didn't go for Google's official one. It saves me from having to go caseless in order to preserve the good looks of the phone.

There are good options for the camera, just not the app that comes with the phone. Two you might look at that should work well with the 6P are Manual Camera and ProShot. Either of those should give you all the settings you are wanting.
