Cover display ambient light sensor?

Is there one? Just curious because when I pull the phone out of pocket to check it it is far too dim to read. When it didn't seem like it would ever brighten I just open the phone to see what's going on. It sure is implemented slowly, if there is a sensor.

If you go to the 'always on display' settings you can toggle the brightness there.it can me automatic or set manually. Just go to the cover screen part. Mine is very bright and clear.
