Cracked Screen Despite Having a Tempered Glass Screen Protector

I accidentally dropped my phone while working today. It only fell a few inches, but it fell onto a metal vice. The glass screen protector was cracked, but out of curiosity I peeled off the protector to find that the screen was cracked close to the home button. The cracks are like 2 inches long, and I though gorilla glass was shatter-proof?

I bought the phone, screen protector, and case (spigen tough armor) in October. I have an iAnder Premium Tempered Glass Screen Protector, which has a 12 month manufactures warranty. Should iAnder cover the cost of replacing the screen? I have insurance, but I'd rather not cough up $100 for a deductible. How hard is replacing the glass? (Not the LCD)

It was frustrating because my old phone (iPhone 4s) shattered. As a precaution with getting a new phone, I bought a nice case and glass screen protector for my phone. Ultimately, it failed!

Gorilla Glass just means it is stronger but it can still break. No phone out there are shatter proof. If you're ever worried about your phone you should always use a case.

No the glass isn't shatter proof. It is crack and damage resistant, not crack and safe proof.

I have no idea about the warranty on your screen protector, you would have to look at their terms.

Also there is a good chance you can get the glass replaced, while you wait, for less than your deductible. Check with some local people that so repairs and ask.

The harder the glass, the more scratch-resistant it is. The softer the glass, the more break-resistant it is. (Try "breaking" Jello - I dare you.) Tempered glass actually cracks with less pressure than Gorilla Glass, it's just a little harder to scratch (a little - carbide particles still cut through it like a laser through butter). The difference is that glass that's really tempered breaks into little pieces, not large shards that can cut you.

If you want scratch safety (not resistance) and break safety (not breakproof), use a cheap plastic screen protector (they scratch easily, but a "3 for $5" protector should last a couple of years for each one, so that's $5 for more than 5 years of protection - AND a good silicone rubber case. (I dropped my Note 3 screen down to a hardwood floor - in an Otterbox Defender. Nearly had a heart attack until I picked it up. Now "has an Otterbox Defender case for it" is one of my criteria in buying a phone. The plastic over the screen can scratch, sure. It's cheap to replace. The silicone rubber takes the shock and saves the screen and everything inside the phone [motherboards can crack too].)

Too expensive? Any TPU case. They come with silicone rubber inserts, and you can get some for as little as $10. Nearly as shock-absorbent as an Otterbox. (But I'm willing to pay extra for that "tough as steel" holster. I've broken two cheap ones by getting the inside tie on my parka caught in the holster.)

If the repair is less than $125, I pay no deductible. Otherwise, its $100. I can basically have it repaired by anyone as long as i give the receipt to squaretrade for reimbursement. I've yet to find anyone (including Samsung) that fixes S5 screens for less than $180.

I guess it depends on your area. My sister has gotten several iphone screens fixed and the place fixed all kinds of screens. Her iphone screens were $75 and I don't know that they are much cheaper than Samsung repairs.

BUT..one thing just came to mind. This is an S5, it is water resistant. I would send it to Samsung to fix. If something happens after the repair, Samsung is liable. There was someone the other day that had a screen repair done on the S5 from a repair place. They didn't seal it well and having it in the hot tub got moisture under the screen.

With the S5 and the water resistance, I would send it to Samsung to know it is sealed correctly and there isn't an issue about warranty if the water resistance doesn't hold up.

I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. What screen protection would you recommend? Already bought a case for it.. Urban Armor Gear. Only thing left is the screen protection. The display is made of gorilla glass and is 12 inches in size.

Thanks!
