Cupcake without T-Mobile?

Hey all,
I have an old G1 that I'm not using anymore, as I'm with AT&T now due to coverage issues with T-Mobile at my new location. I am still curious about the Cupcake update and want to try it out on my G1. I am connected to WiFi but of course not to T-Mobile's network. Can I still get the update via WiFi, or will it push down only over the carrier's network?

I saw somewere on this forum a manual install for the cupcake. What phone are you using with att. I'm a bb user and am debating over switching to htc magic or next gen iphone.....I just can't decide.....
