Custom SMS notification sound not working

just got my S7 and use hangouts for my SMS over the stock Samsung app and I changed the notification sound to something different and still get the stock hangouts notification even though the setting say it is not that. I also changed the settings through the phone to the same sound in the messages setting and nothing. is there some other setting in a place i'm not looking?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using a preinstalled tone or a custom tone? When you go into the Hangouts settings, be aware that you can change the tone for your SMS messages as well as the Hangouts messages. To change your SMS tones, are going to the Hangouts settings and tapping SMS (as opposed to your account name under Account Settings)? If you tap the account name, that will change the tones for Hangout IMs (not SMS).

its a custom ringtone set the same tone for both and still get the stock hangouts sound even changed the sound under notifications> messages in the phone's settings. the sound plays in the selection screen without problem both in hangouts and in phone settings. baffling

Is the custom tone saved on the microSD card or in Internal Storage? Make sure you have it saved in the Notifications directory in Internal Storage.

there is no sd card in the phone

Try going to the App Manager, select Hangouts, and Clear Cache/Data. Then open it again and see if the problem persists. If it does, also try a cache partition wipe: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-24999

I'm having the same issue. I've tried all this and still doesn't work. Even tried uninstalling and reinstalling hangouts and still doesn't work.

found a workaround Hangouts suggested switching to google's messenger so i tried it and now custom SMS sounds work for me! YAY
