Customer reviews of the Note 8

I've had the Note for less than 24 hours now. So far I'm enjoying it. Pretty screen. I was most concerned about the FPS placement. It's bad. But I'm already used to reaching for it. I find it all the time. So in that sense it's not a problem. Hopefully, future Notes will move the FPS but it's been quite easy for me to get used to.

I dont get this BS everywhere. The fps make perfect sense for how one holds the phone. Only is it a slight inconvenience if you're using the phone and need it for in-app fingerprint password

Absolutely love this device. Beautiful photos, very fast processing, multi task, Bixby, Samsung Pay, love the love messages, you name it. It's got it all.

love messages? I don't get any love messages, sigh. LOL

I'm coming from an iPhone 7 plus but had the S7 edge before that and my gosh has Samsung optimized the note 8 well. No stutters like other Android phones. I briefly had the KeyOne and while I enjoyed the form factor the software wasn't optimized at all. The scrolling on the Note 8 is buttery smooth.

I've had the Note8 since yesterday evening, and these are my first impressions.

I was using, until yesterday, an S7 edge. The last Note I had was the Note 3. But I have used iPhones, Windows phones, Blackberries.

With that said, coming from the S7 edge, this Note8 is feeling as top heavy as Dolly Parton on a pogo stick. I'm hoping over time I will get adjusted to the size. No problems reaching the power or volume buttons. And the one thing I am very happy about is the edge on the Note is not so dramatic like it was on the S7. I don't lock my phone (it's my precious) so I don't care about the FPS on the back, although it is a really awkward reach.

I lasted with the Samsung Experience (TouchWiz) for about 1 hour. I now have Nova, and as such, I'm a happy camper. Hated how Bixby was over the left side, and I have more control over the dock with Nova. Themed it with a dark black background, and it's not all the way to my liking yet, but will be by the weekend, after I am done pretending to work today.

The app pair in combo with the sPen is one of the best features of this smartphone. I was swapping two browsers (Chrome and Samsung browser), cutting and pasting. Switched over briefly to my kids school web site, used the sPen to note a couple of assignments he missed, jotted down some ideas for punishment (that included an old fashioned but effective flogging with a pool noodle) then went back to copying and pasting some bookmarks and such.

Make no mistake about it ... the sPen is the JAM! I am obsessed with the clicky thing on the end. I can't stop, and I need help.

I consume a lot of YouTube videos, and a lot of potato chips. This screen, therefore, is awesome for watching vids, especially when they are formatted for the 18:9 ratio. And the speaker, for all the knashing of teeth by the audio elite on here, is IMO very loud and clear.

I did not have the burning pleasure of owning the Note7. But coming from an S7 edge, this is a nice upgrade in screen size, but mostly a huge change in the way you CAN use a smartphone. It's all about the sPen.

I'm really liking the new shape. I was definitely on the fence about how tall it is but I'm impressed, very easy for me to handle.

My thoughts exactly. I wasn't to sure of the TALL look but now I really like the phone.

I disagree. I personally feel this phone is better weight balanced.

The s7e used to top over my hand and fall constantly

Go use a Pixel or v30 for a while then come back to this and tell us the FPS placement is not bad. It is bad.

The N8 is a great phone, it's ok to acknowledge a single small negative, no?

What's negative for some is positive for others.

That is definitely true. You actually feel this is a "positive" then? that the FPS is in a good position compared to other rear FPS sensors? I haven't heard anyone yet feel this way, but I suppose some people might.

For sure, the position won't bother some people. But I don't think that makes it a "positive". In any case, I won't pick nits anymore. It's a great phone overall for sure.

Most people will complain or dismiss a feature that they don't see an advantage in or don't use enough on their own to see a benefit in promoting. That's the impression I get from a lot of these reviews.

There is one advantage I can see already, but don't have the phone yet to test my theory:

If you are a right handed previous note owner, then you are probably used to holding the phone in your left hand to use with the S-pen. If that is the case, then it might be useful to enable FPS and scan in the index finger on your left hand. The way the phone is shaped, I can see that being a good place to get used to holding it and have that finger fall right onto the FPS sensor when you pick it up or are holding it. To get an almost instant unlock of the Note 8 when you pick it up and in a position to feel quite natural to the position of that hand.
