CWM hangs in operations

A friend rooted his phone using the update.zip method and wanted to flash CM7. He tried several times and told me that it would just sit there. 15 minutes later, still nothing. So I told him to swing by and I would have a go. I tried flashing CM7 in CWM and same result. I thought maybe he had a faulty recovery so I tried reflashing in ROM Manager. I noticed two different options for the Captivate; Galaxy S Captivate and Captivate (MTD). I read the instructions on the CM7 thread here and it said to use MTD. He originally used the other one. So I tried to flash the MTD and it gave me an error. Something like this: "Rom manager has been set up to use your existing recovery installation." Nothing happens after that. I try to flash in recovery again and nothing. Then he informs me that he hasn't done a full wipe yet. So I back up his apps, boot into CWM recovery and perform a wipe. The wipe hangs...same as flashing.

So back to stock with Heimdall I go so I can start from scratch and know that anything that is wrong is not due to something he did before and forgot about or anything like that. Clean slate, so to speak. That went well, no problems. Re-rooted, flashed CWM recovery for Captivate (MTD) rebooted into CWM recovery and all operations still hang. What am I missing here? If there is some piece of vital info I am not giving out here, just ask and I'll get right back and answer.

I appreciate any help I can get. And Just FYI, I do not currently have the device with me but I am relaying this thread to my friend who does so he can stop by and answer questions that I can't and try things out himself.

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest doing it all manually. Install CWM the update.zip method, and then download the CM file and flash it manually.

FYI, nightly 32 has a root issue, check out the CM nightlies thread for the fix.

He was using the update.zip method first before he came to me, if I remember correctly, and was having the issue. I can retry all that next time I see him, but is there any other reason anything I do in recovery just hangs?

My main suggestion was to manually download the CM7 file and boot into recovery. ROM Manager has always been glitchy for me.

Have you tried flashing something else? If nothing else works, then it's a recovery issue. If something else does, then it's an issue with the CM file. I suggest redownloading everything (update.zip included) and trying again, just in case it was an issue with the download.

It wasn't just the flashing of the ROM that hung, but wiping too. Yeah he didn't go through ROM manager to download CM7 and neither did I. The only thing I did in ROM manager was attempt to flash recovery which gave the result I outlined above. The whole rooting flashing and whatnot process for these samsung phones is just a bit different from what I an used to (thunderbolt and og droid) I'll definitely try re-doing the recovery though and get back with results. Thank you.

Ah, my bad, must have misread it. Let me know how it goes.

This is the owner of the phone in question:

I rooted via update.zip method, installed ROM Manager, and when I tried to download CM7 through ROM Manager, nothing showed up! I purchased the premium version and tried again to no avail. The only things that showed up were a few free ROMs like Google Analytics and MIUI.us. So, I tried to install the rom from my SD card, choosing the .zip from the XDA Nightly Build list; Upon reinstalling packages, it starts to install from the SD, then makes absolutely zero progress, no matter how long I let it run.

EDIT----
I tried redownloading all the update.zip, cm7 zip, etc, and I'm getting the same problem.

If you're getting a reinstall packages option, you're not in CWM. Are you on Froyo? If so, there's an extra step to install CWM because the stock recovery changed from Eclair to Froyo.

I'm on Eclair still. I use a Mac, so there's no Kies option available to me, so until Samsung does an OTA update, I'm stuck to rooting, and Bootcamp isn't an option. I refuse to use Windows.

I'm not sure how I get into CWM then... I've followed all the instructions I've seen step by step... But there has to be a step I'm missing. Sounds like its getting into CWM. How exactly would I go about doing this?

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure you have the right update.zip? There's one for root and one for CWM. If you have the right one, place it on your sd named update.zip, and boot into recovery and hit reinstall packages, let it run, and do it again, and you'll boot into CWM.

CWM is a green menu, so when you see that, you're golden. If you're not sure if you have the right file, the one in the root sticky is right.

Hmm I checked out your sticky on rooting; However SuperOneClick is PC only, and I can't dual boot into windows. The program I had used originally for my Mac to root was found here. Would this update.zip be ok?

EDIT----
Looks like this might be from the same developer as SuperOneClick.

No, that one is for rooting only. There's a post in the sticky for installing clockwork, use the file that's linked to in that.

After downloading clockworkrecovery.zip and renaming it update.zip, I moved it to my internal SD card, rebooted, and it instantly went to this screen.

Should I say uh-oh at this point?

Not a big deal, you just booted into download mode. Just pull the battery. Make sure you didn't have it plugged in while you're trying to get into recovery.

Ok, so now it's giving me an error saying "Installation aborted" when I click Reinstall Packages. Or should I just reboot the system regularly?

Here's what it says word for word:
Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

It also says Android system recovery, NOT cwm.

Try redownloading it and trying it again. Sounds like a bad file, other than that I'm not sure what the issue could be.

When I download the zip, it automatically decompresses itself, and I have to re-zip it. Maybe this has something to do with the file corruption?

Possibly. I'm not sure how OS X works with compression. Maybe try downloading it on your phone.
