CWM not working?

(for a friend with an Atrix)

1) accepted the OTA GB update when it was pushed
2) using the Androidcentral instructions (ABD commands), he rooted his phone
3) downloaded TerminalEmulator, "su" and confirmed a "#" showing he was rooted.
4) downloaded ROM Manager, installed the ClockworkMod recovery (version 4.3.3.0)
5) initiated 'backup' for a nandroid backup (redundant, ha) but Rom Manager stated "Failed to boot starting RSD mode"
when it came back to the moto logo screen

read CWM might not be reliable yet, or he might need an additional Bootstrap app (common for Motorolas?)

any ideas how to successfully make a backup right now?

(also, since we can't get into Recovery, we can't check his Bootloader version. any ideas how to tell if his bootloader is Locked or Unlocked?)
if Unlocked, looks like we can use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261 to install a good Recovery

this is what you need to install for recovery

the rom managers recovery doesnt work for the atrix at this time

i'd seen a few different Recoveries, including this one, but was unsure because of the locked/unlocked issue.
hope you're certain! if the phone bricks--i'm screwed, ha.

i use that recovery without any issues and i still have a locked bootloader, i aint unlocking it until i can get CM7.1 without bugs so... lol

only things i have done to my atrix is rooted, and installed recovery (that one i posted before)

Recovery linked to above will work with locked bootloader but there are no ROMs to use with locked bootloader. Look on briefmobile.com I believe for step by step instructions for unlock. Or look on XDA.

i followed a step by step guide from xda on how to unlock. it wasnt bad, took me about an hour or so.
