Ok so pretty much some thing is broken. I tried to flash a gaps package and it said some thing about using adb to side load it.

Backup completed with system and data mounted but the zip created was extremely minimal.

Did you change preferred backup to tar?

Has anyone actually successfully restored the system backup made from here? I know we can't use the restore function because it isn't making a real Android, but just curious of anyone has used some method to restore their system partition.

So the reboot loop, do you mean if you click reboot system in recovery it just keeps rebooting? Or once you do this your phone is only good for testing the recovery?

Reboot loop? It doesn't reboot. Just pull the battery.

Yeah, it won't get out of recovery unless you do a battery pull..
