darkened screen may be result of defective sensor?

The sensor used for sleeping with magnetic covers may be too sensitive. My wife's n7 shuts of the screen when she folds the cover back as well as when it covers the screen. The spine of the cover apparently contains the magnet based on how the screens go off when I move just the spine near the screen

Yup, sounds like the magnet is either not properly positioned in the case, or is too powerful. A lot of case makers have had to revise their designs for this reason. Contact whoever sold you the case.
