Data connection with Android Auto?

I've noticed once I get in my car and plug in for Android Auto my Data won't connect unless my phone screen is on. I'll have to manually turn the phones screen on then Data will snap in and my navigation will update regarding estimated ETA. Any ideas why this is? I do not have Power Saving turned on.
