Data Plan Being Eaten By Chrome?

I know this is an old thread and specific to the chrome app, but I have been having huge issues with the chrome desktop browser when tethered. I few months back my gigabytes were into the twenties, but I was doing some extra work with getting a tablet setup with a custom ROM, so I figured that's where much of my data went, but I still couldn't see how 20gb. So, I decided to download a data monitoring app.
I hadn't tethered for a few days, and so I had only used about 40mb. I had to tether briefly to forward a file I had on my computer. I went here and iMore. Maybe 1/2 hour tethered - browsing on Chrome.
Then disconnected. The app said I used 200mb! Again, thought maybe something weird on my end. Today I tethered again to forward another small file - 200kb. Again checked AC here. Maybe spent 1/2 hour here, and another 1/2 hour on T-Mobile's site reading about data plans. 420mb used! Argh! Next time I tether, I'm going to try a different browser and see what happens.

That is an exorbitant amount of background data. I've never seen a web browser need that much data. Heck, even Spotify doesn't use that much background data and it's a data hog. Here is my use from last month. Notice how the background data is only very small in proportion to the foreground data.

BTW, I have the little brother version of your phone, the Razr Maxx.

Sent from Droid Razr Maxx using Tapatalk 2.

I have a Maxx 2 and mine does the same thing. Chrome used 3 GB in 3 weeks.

I realise this is an old thread, but it comes up at the to of the Google search for that terms, so I'll update here too.

I'm using. Pixel, Chrome has used 1.1 and 1.8 GB of mobile a in each of the last2 months. I don't d do that much browsing on the phone, and I'm on WiFi a good chunk of the time. I've now blocked background data completely to tame its usage.

I've no idea what it could have been doing in the background to check that much data. I didn't even have any tabs open in the app.

Yeah, I'm gonna resurrect this thread one more time. Chrome on Android just ate 5,2gb of data in 10 days. I have no idea how this is possible. Would love to diagnose it.

Hi,

Just ran into the same problem. used 2 gigs in one night, while i was sleeping.

Deleted chrome, after deletion, it used another 390 mb in the background.

I ran virus scanners, nothing can be found. WTF. This little stunt has already set me back 15 bucks in extra data purchase. I need to be able to use mobile data, but I am reticent about buying more data packadge while this tick keeps sucking it up.

I heard elsewhere that resetting to factory standards can solve it for some, but that is an amazing amount of hassle.

What should I do?
