Data speed is slow sometimes

So my sensation has fast data usually, it says 4g and I get 1-3 mbps. Then sometimes It says 2g and I get 50kbps. It never says 3g. Yesterday I did some speed tests head to head with My girlfriends Vibrant 3g. At first I had 2g and was pulling 50kbps while her phone was getting 1.5mbps. 20 minutes later I tried again and I had 4g and got 2 mbps while hers got 1 mbps. Is this weird to anyone. Is there a fix to get my 3g working.

You will never see 3g signal indicators on tmobiles 4g phones. It will jump from 2g to 4g.
