Do i need to do a data wipe on my old defective phone when returning it to Verizon if i took out the sim card to use on my new replacement phone?
is most data stored on the sim card?
concerned about the contacts, call logs , texts ,etc.

Yes wipe it clean before returning it. Settings>Accounts>Backup and Reset>Factory Data Reset - This will wipe all your personal data off the phone.
