Default Apps "Open with"

The problem is that it doesn't ask you to choose "Always" - it just asks you to pick the app once, at which point it automatically makes it default. Then you have to go into the menuing system and choose to clear the defaults for a particular app.

I have no idea what was wrong with the old system where you could EITHER choose to make it default or choose to just let it open an app once. For some reason, they took this option away and make it default once you choose the app no matter what.

I don't think it's a bug because they give you a popup explanation after choosing the app which tells you to go into the menu to clear the default if you don't want it. It was a design decision, perhaps just not the right one.

How do we get it back to the old way?
I post pictures to several places from my gallery and drop box, and occasionally other apps. I can only get access to gallery even after clearing defaults

Pretty sure this is a TouchWiz thing, not a Google thing. My Marshmallow Nexus doesn't do this. Only my S5. Grr!

I'm getting ready to drop my S5 and go for a Nexus 5X. This is one of the reasons that I'm now looking away from the S7.

Anyone else notice they got rid of the "open with" feature when opening files or attachments? Went to go open a PDF that someone sent me via gmail and chose to open with a specific app. The device usually asks me to choose "just now" or set default. The device didn't ask me this and now I have to go to default app section in settings and clear the option if I want to open the file with a different app. Am I missing something here?

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I figured it out for anyone else who has this problem. There's no 3rd party app needed. Go to <settings <applications. press 3 dots (or options) in top right corner of the screen, then select <default apps. In that menu, there is an option for "DEFAULT APP SELECTION". Choose that and switch from automatic to ask me. I hope it helps.

I don't have any options/3 dots/more menu at the applications screen. Samsung probably updated to include this feature in some markets and forgot others.

This inconsistency is extremely annoying, I don't mind Touchwiz as long as it's the same for everyone.
Note 4, Note 5 and Note 7 are all running Marshmallow, but they all have complete different versions of Touchwiz and then there's fragmentation by carrier/country.

can you please PRECISELY (sorry for caps but they are needed here) describe were to find the setting? in my SM-N910P Note4 Sprint 6.0.1 there is no such option. do you mean go in every app and choose always ask? in some there is, others not. or is there one global option?

we would appreciate if you upload screenshots of where you find and changed what, step by step.

google and samsung suck. it used to be perfect and productive.

I had the same problem but I found the solution...
- Settings
- Applications
- Default applications
- Default app selection
- Select "Ask before setting default apps"

I'm using a Galaxy S7 Edge and the Android version is 6.0.1

that is weird.

i am on Galaxy Note 4 Sprint (SM-N910P) with 6.0.1 as well and setting is not there.

now using Better Open With App which i almost great after new updates.

I also have a sprint note 4 and this option does not appear in PH4, PJ1 or PK1. Very disappointing. I actually reflashed lollipop OK1 in the meantime.

How do i set power amp as the defualt audio player? Have a note 7. Tried all suggestions here. If i download an mp3 attachment from my email and try to open it the "open with" options are always google music and irrelevant apps smfh this is gay!

After the Nougat update i was missing my 3 dots. It turned out to be because if a custom Touchwiz theme i was using hiding them.

I don't have that advanced "Default App Selection" either. I'm running a Galaxy S5 with Marshmallow.

I was using the Google app to search for an image, found my image, wanted to share my image but only needed to copy to clipboard this one time. Well, TouchWiz decided that that was the permanent app to use. I can't go into my clipboard app and clear its defaults because there is no clipboard app (I chose the "Show System Apps" option and looked at the two clipboard options there, nothing to clear).

I'll try the Better Open With app...
