Default Messenger App - labeling old messages "Unread"

I've been using the default messaging app on my Nexus 6P (Project Fi). Overall it's working absolutely fine except for one annoying glitch. It has a tendency to show very old, long past read, messages in the notification bar. In other words, it'll correctly show a new unread message, but will also show a message from years ago.

Anyone else have this problem and know of a solution? Thanks in advance!

I am having a similar issue except my text app shows I have unread messages but I have no unread messages. Numbers sit by the app but there are no unread messages.
