Defective Charger, Google Replacing Entire Device

I'm not complaining, just wanted to see if this was the norm. I got my wife the Nexus 7 when it launched, and it seems to have worked fine for the most part. The other day I unplugged it from the charger, and the plastic cover towards the end where the mini usb is just slide off, exposing the copper wiring under it. I called Google Support and was told that they no longer stock the chargers (odd considering that you can buy them on the Play store and they obviously make them still), so they'd have to send a new device (I was sure to ask that it is new, and not a refurb). They sent me a link to order the new one, are putting a hold on my account, and will remove the hold when they receive the old one back. Has anyone else experienced this? (the charger coming apart, or a full replacement for a damaged accessory?)

That happened to a third party cable I bought for my RAZR Maxx. Strange that they have to replace the whole device just to replace the USB cable.

I've not experienced what you described here, but what I find most interesting is the time line. If you bought your N7 at launch, that's almost five months ago. Normally with Google, after 15 days you'd have to deal directly with Asus for warranty repair issues, though I've heard Google was somewhat flexible with that. But five months later? That's a lot of flex in their official policy!

hmm... my cable broke that way literally a week after i got it in july. I took my old BlackBerry micro usb and use it since.

Maybe i should call google and complain about it.. who knows i might get fresh N7! (kidding)

I thought it was odd too, and wasn't sure what the policy was. I figured if they told me no, I'd just buy a new one. I was under the weather, so even after being on hold for 23 minutes (despite the automated "your call will be answered in less than 5 minutes), I was polite and just asked the question when he offered the full replacement. One of the few breaks I've gotten ... though I don't want to jinx myself before I actually receive the UPS delivery today!

I experienced it the first week I got it, I just didn't say anything about it. I should call huh?

Re: Defective Charger, Google Replacing Entire Device ARE THEY RPL 2012 W/ 2013 ??

I now own a really great, Asus Google Nexus 7 (2012) unit, that's within it's warranty period. My original Nexus Charger has failed. It just stopped putting out any power, yet my Nexus 7 unit Itself, does, operate perfectly, with an "aftermarket" adapter! I'm an Electronic Technician, and understand that the original Nexus Power Adapter, has failed, and it needs to be replaced by "Asus/Nexus/Google," under the terms of their warranty. There is NO NEED, TO SEND THE ENTIRE UNIT BACK, to them, but that is what the manufacturer IS REQUIRING, according to people on this forum, are stating this is, what they require! I've read on this forum, that the manufacturer, requires the entire unit, be returned to them, along with, the power adapter; and they will then replace the Entire Unit, If The Adapter Is Defective! Well, my "2012 Model, of the Nexus7, 32GB, Cell Phone, Model, has been discontinued, for a long time now, and has been replaced, by the 2013 Model. DOES ANYONE KNOW? IF THE MANUFACTURER, IS REPLACING, DEFECTIVE, 2012 MODELS, WITH THE CURRENT, 2013 MODELS ? This is my question! Thanks, and God Bless you all! Have a great day, and have a very Merry Christmas Holiday & Season!!! Rob.

This is a thread that's over 2 years old, so I'm not sure if the answers are still relevant. If it's only your charger that is defective, then you really ought to be able to use any standard charger from any of your other devices. To charge my 2012 N7, I have successfully used the USB cable and charger from my old Droid Razr Maxx, my 2013 Nexus 7, and my Nexus 5.
