Definitely sticking to metal phones.

Don't get me wrong, I use cases on all my phones, with a few to choose from for every phone.
But phones are also designed to be enjoyed the way they are from the manufacturer.. For example the Note 3 has a very comfortable to hold faux leather back. How can they be enjoyed with a case on?
Phones "should" be also designed to withstand a little abuse before crumbling.
Having a plastic frame might be a shortfall on the design of the Note 3. It doesn't make it a bad device by any means though.

Pretty much nothing will survive a fall from 4-ft on concrete without scuffing or damage, except for maybe some composites and rubbers...
These phones won't survive that and stay damage free - they're phones, not lacrosse balls...
I can't see how a metal phone would survive it either without scuffing....but maybe that's just me.

Laptops come in metal or plastic. They are built to withstand a little abuse but a drop onto concrete...it will suffer damage. ANYTHING can suffer damage from a fall onto concrete, tile, asphalt, and hard clay. You have a choice. Either protect it or don't. Either way. You don't protect it but accidentally drop it onto concrete then punt it across a parking lot, your fault, not the manufacturers.

I dropped mine on concrete from eye level, and it's only a tiny dent. No scratches or any other random stuff.
Luck is a factor too when you drop your phone.

You could make a phone out of the most durable material available, but if you don't bother taking care of it then it's just going to prematurely fail you. There's a reason that children's toys are made out of durable material, it's because they're rough and irresponsible with their things. Give me an elegant looking device that is meant to be taken care of. Keep the kiddie proofed devices, I'll gladly use my device that requires some level of responsibility that not everyone has mastered.

You realise if the phone was metal... in addition to the scratches you'd have a huge dent on your phone right???

Case looks to add 3-4mm in length and width. Other than that, looks amazing. I may just get one of those in black. Wish they would make cases like this that replace the back cover of the phone. Would make it practically the same thickness as the actual phone. The Note 3 would have looked amazing if they used the same materials.

Well you can't have it all. Either you keep it thin, or you add a case for protection. If you want to run it naked, there is a solution to not getting dings and dents: don't drop your phone.

Go with the S-View case. It feels much better than the original battery cover. It actually feels and smells like leather. [Is it? for $60 it better be.]

Actually it adds 1.1m not noticeable and does not add much noticeable weight.

I know. I think I will wait another month and if I have not destroyed it, I will grab one of those kommandat cases since it looks the least like a case. Too bad they did not use the actual Note logo. They just put the words on the back. Better than Kommandant I guess.

My ATT black feels like as good of leather as any. I think there is a difference in backs between the carriers. My black feels very different than the white att. So I assume that the ATT black is as good as it comes.

You guys do realize that plastic is much more forgiving when it comes to the shock of drops. Plastic will absorb the shock while metal will transfer it to the screen/internals.

Also, I've had metal phones and hated how easy the metal scratches. My S View case is textured leather like material doesn't scratch at all, keeps the phone looking OEM and protects my screen. Even though I don't drop my phones, a friend was looking at my phone and dropped it from about 4 feet high on concrete. It put a tiny little dent in the corner of the case, since the case sticks out a little more than the phone on all sides it provides some protection against drops.X

In my experience, my metal phone only got a small ding when I dropped it from 36" to a ceramic tile floor. My plastic phone got a smashed up corner from a <18" drop. I got my metal phone for $0.01 on an ATT WP sale 2 years ago. I got my plastic phone for $199. Not sure what metal phone you had, but my Titan was extremely durable. Was not a shiny metal so it was probably a little more resilient to fine scratches but suffered no scratches other than its counter height drops.

I don't drop my phones often. I would say I will drop my phone maybe 4 times in the 2 years I will own it. If that is excessive, then I guess I am hard on phones.

This case looks very forgiving and soft.

I had the titan 2 which was free no contract from Microsoft. Granted I think that the titan 2 is plastic but a it was built well. With that said, drop wise it would handle better than my note 3 which I got free on contract after gc but I would pick a Galaxy, even one of same age, over the titan 2 any day. The titan 2 was very heavy for what it was.

With that said, a metal phone even from a 36" drop could crack the screen depending on how it fell.I have seen a drop test confirming this.

I could add an otterbox commuter case to my s3 and our would weigh about as much as my bare titan 2.

My N3 is a much better device than my Titan ever was of course. It's 2 years newer. In the mobile world that is an eternity. Titan was heavier than a galaxy sevice bexause of the metal for the same reason. But it was almost as light as the much smaller Nokia 800. Then the Nokia 900 was the same weight and still smaller than the titan. So making a metal phone will be slightly heavier but not the heaviest phone on the market.

Obviously drops from significant height will damage any phone. Drops from lesser heights will damage the N3 more than a metal phone. Any device dropped on screen will result in a broken screen.

Titan 2 saved 13g over Titan by using plastic. Not enough to matter to me but it's not one of the most important specs I look at. Hence the N3 purchase which is heavier than titan. Obviously due to screen size.

Actually the titan 2 was 13g heavier than the titan, and also 30% thicker. I only had the titan 2 and in comparison to the s3,it was much heavier. Both phones came out about the same time.

But if metal phones are so important to you, why didn't you get the one or the one max or some other metal phone? If course the one max is about 29% heavier than the note 3, if weight was a factor.

Was considering the One, but its hardware was no where near the hardware of the Note 3. And it has a 1" smaller screen and nearly 1000 mAh battery deficiency. Those were some of the important specs in my decision. Case construction was a 2nd tier factor but is still important to me. I mean these are $700 devices so I think they should have top notch build and materials.
