Hmm. I guess it doesn't always "just work", does it?:p Either that, or they really don't want you to leave.

I agree with mustang7757, you probably have to contact a human at Apple support directly. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201232
Speaking to a human now. She can't deregister it on her end and she's told me to do everything I have already done. This is why I dislike apple.

Wow, that's awful. Can you ask her to escalate to a higher tech support level? It would be unacceptable to me to leave it at "sorry, you're stuck being registered on iMessage." I mean, that would contribute to encouraging users not to switch, which would be an unfair trade practice.

Maybe another day. When she suggested I try again tomorrow and that she would send me a link on how to deregister after 35 min on the phone (on hold and talking to her) I just hung up.

. It's both. The fact that they make you deregister lets you know they don't want you to leave. It's not called the wall garden for nothing.

If you turned it off on your iPhone, then it should be de-registered.

Anyone who can't send you messages, ask them to delete the current message thread on their iPhones and open a new one. That should stop the iMessages. Also make sure they have "send as sms if iMessage not available" turned on in their message settings.

All of that was done and it's still not working.
