Destroyed my phone - Warranty Question

Yes technically it is considered insurance fraud. Something that happened before you took coverage is not covered by asurion. So technically he is claiming the accident happened after he took insurance etc.....but who cares, quit playing internet super hero and let this guy get bad/good advice!

Theoretically if it weren't for people scamming the insurance companies, we would all pay less for insurance, and thus, more people could afford it, and thus, more people would buy it, making the cost even less...and so on.

Since the insurance company is a different entity than Verizon, and the coverage is listed on your account now, I don't think you would have any problem using it to get a replacement. However, if the phone still works you should be able to take it into Verizon and get a replacement - sans $50 deductible. It would go under a warranty claim. I have done this twice (even though I do have the insurance). I was told as long as it powers up, it falls under warranty claim. Insurance claims are for dropping it in water, losing it or it being stolen. If I were you I'd hightail it down to Verizon and try to get it replaced under warranty.

Warranty will not cover a crushed screen......or anything else caused by the user.

Am I understanding this right? If I dropped my phone and the screen cracked, verizon would replace it for $50? If that's true, it's really comforting to know.

They will have Asurion replace it for you if you have insurance. The deductible is now $89 for Android devices.

Call it what you want, I still think it is uptight because it doesn't make a difference if you drop the phone right before or right after getting the insurance...you still going to pay the same insurance fee. It was two months, wow, he defrauded the insurance company out of $16, big deal.

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but the cost of insurance fraud exactly like this is ultimately paid by you and me. More fraud = higher insurance premiums for everyone. More importantly, it's wrong ... even when it's a big bad insurance company you are ripping off.

I know, I know ... now you'll say I'm being uptight. But if it's OK to rip off "the man," wouldn't it also be OK if someone ripped you off, especially if they were "littler" than you? You may rationalize away unethical or illegal behavior to make yourself feel better, but there is a right and wrong, and pretending otherwise does nothing to change reality.

Character is how you act when no one is looking.

Well, I would have never of gotten the insurance if this had not happened. And I'm going to continue paying for it even after I get the replacement.

So, they will probably end up still making a profit.

That $16 add up because this isn't the first or last time this will happen.

As long as you feel better thinking that way I guess it's ok.

By my figuring:

Phone: $600 (Rough estimate because I don't feel like looking it up, and yes I'm aware the don't pay that much for the phone in reality.)
Deductible paid by you: -$89
Amount left: $511

Insurance: $7.99 a month.
Amount of months to break even on your phone: ~64 months.

So yeah if you never have to replace your phone again and you keep insurance for the next 5-7 years then yes they will end up making money off you.

And the moral of today's story is...wait, who gives a damn. Everyone will have their own opionion, we agree to disagree, get off our soapboxes and move on.

As Qazme points out, it's not the $16 premium that is the amount of the fraud, it is the cost of the the replacement phone less the deductible - which is hundreds of dollars.

There is a reason you have to buy insurance BEFORE something happens. No one is making you buy insurance - it is your choice. If your choice proves wrong, you do not have the legal right to commit fraud. It's called living with the consequences of your actions and choices.

I won't even get into your misinformed view of the insurance carrier making a profit, which likely will never happen in your case, but ask yourself this: where exactly do you suppose the money comes from that the insurance companies use to pay out their claims?

As long as you feel better thinking that way I guess it's ok.

Fortunately, laws are not contingent on how each individual feels about them.

I'm sorry if I somehow cost you all money and/or offended anyone.

And the thought that a giant company may end up making money off of me does not make me feel better. I actually feel worse knowing that I'm giving even more money to companies like VZW that make money hand over foot and still charge their ridiculous prices.

What does make me feel better, though, is the fact that I'm saving close to $500.

It was not my slip up, it was Verizon's. Don't blame me for something I'm sure ALL of you would have ended up trying if you were in my position, but not necessarily succeeding where I have. I was fully expecting to pay the full amount, but I caught a break. It really helps me out too because I'm hardly getting any hours where I work anymore and I'm struggling to find a second job.

Thanks to all of those who wished me the good luck, I hope the same to you too.

I jumped out of the back of a truck while carrying an air conditioner and it smashed down on the phone while it was in my pocket.

... I agreed and told him that I "dropped" my phone today and that it gave me a reality check to get a warranty. ;)

Now you want to blame Verizon because you lied to a Verizon CSR and he believed you? Amazing.

when you say "added coverage" are you talking about the service that Asurion provides?

This post is full of win. It's not my fault I lied and got my way! Come on! It's also not my fault I live in a free capitalist society where I have the option to pick a lower cost alternative or not have their over priced service at all but I sill use it! Sheesh guys......
