GS3, 4.1.2, 3.0.31-1130792 kernel, stock rom, rooted.

I rooted my phone at home using my desktop which is running XP, all is fine, computer sees the phone whenever I plug it in to access files, pictures or whatever. So I brought my laptop into work to root my friend's phone, same phone, I bought mine about a month after he did, my laptop (Vista) will not recognize either of our phones. I downloaded and installed the drivers, went into the add/remove hardware section of the control panel, there it sees a samsung android phone but when I try to install the device I get a notice saying the device cannot be started - code 10. Just wasted a whole lot of time trying to root my friend's phone and couldn't even get to the first step.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

it's your DATA cable. i use xp, vista, and windows 7... with a blackberry data cable.. "i have no problems". it's your cable buddy.

Found the problem, windows downloaded an update for Vista that was something for connecting an android device, I didn't remember the name of the update, but afterwards the phones connects and the laptop recognizes it fine.

Went back and checked my update history, this is the detail of the update windows downloaded....
