Device won't stop scanning media, then restarting the OS

If there is another thread like this, I apologize. I searched and skimmed and delved and didn't find any, just point me in the right direction if anyone knows of one like this :)

Long story short, it started this morning. I haven't done a system update since a few weeks ago, but I did update several game apps yesterday (and photobucket). This morning, it started buzzing to let me know the media scanner finished running. Which was odd, because my phone was just sitting in my pocket.

It's hardly stopped scanning since.

I'll turn it on, it'll run the media scanner, then tell me it's finished, then do it again a few times before the phone goes black (with the 4 buttons still lit) and the OS restarts. Not the whole phone, just the OS.

I've looked at the running apps, they're less than what's running on my husband's captivate. I've been doing what I can to back my photos up by gmail, since my pc refuses to recognize the device, though it does try unsuccessfully to install software for it. The upshot of hooking it up pointlessly with my USB cable, though, is that the phone doesn't realize the pc won't talk to it and it stops the media scanning, which buys me some time to e-mail the important things to myself before it restarts the OS again.

I'd really like to just fix this, but I've always just been a happy superficial user, never trying to do anything but play with a couple games. Has anyone heard of this or have any idea what might be causing it?

Try putting the phone into the airplane mode. That stopped the endless reboots for me. I found that the Lookout program was causing my problem.

If you have an external sd card, try removing that.

I'd bet that the likely culprit is photobucket - sounds as though it's continually indexing the media. Maybe you could try uninstalling that? If you do it through the marketplace, you can reinstall paid apps without having to re-pay (navigate to the app, click on it, and there ought to be an uninstall icon bottom right).

Hope this helps, AoN

I did try removing the SD card and uninstalling the likely culprits - photobucket mainly, but anything that even looked slightly iffy (or had suspicious access to something) met with the uninstall button. I turned on airplane mode, it's been about two minutes but it seems to be working! Of course, as soon as I post this it'll start doing it again :) I don't see anything remotely resembling something called lookout running (or installed), but as long as it works long enough for me to get Keis working and get my texts and contacts backed up, I don't mind resetting the darn thing!

Thanks a lot ^^

I think lookout is a security app. If you don't recognize the name, I'd not worry about it.

Hope this helps,

AoN

Never did find the root of the problem, but the trick with flight mode let me back up all my data. Factory reset fixed the issue. Thank you again for your help :)

I am also having this issue except I can't stop mine! I've tried all of the above methods... It happened while I was driving home from work today. I was using the speech-to-text to send a txtmsg to someone, and it rebooted. Ever since then, it boots up to the Media Scanner, loads a couple other programs and reboots! I'm going to quickly try and disable some of the apps and see what happens.

Mine started doing this exact same thing yesterday and hasn't stopped for almost a full 24 hours; except when I've had the phone off. I've tried pulling the battery, removed the SD card, changed batteries, shut off the "Debugging upon USB Connect", etc. I was finally able to put it in Airplane Mode (it wouldn't stay booted long enough for me to find it). Now the endless reboot has stopped, but now what? I can't leave my phone in Airplane Mode forever!
