What FIRMWARE are you talking about? You mean the OS version? Or are you assuming he is rooted and using a custom ROM?

no if he is on stock rom it might be a bug on the firmware (OS)
Go to recovery then clear cache and data
to backup the data use helium app
OR re-flashing will help
