It is a decision that YOU need to make for what YOU want.
I had used WinMo (Pocket PC, Win CE) phones and devices for many many years. I had a long list of apps that I added to those devices. I just switched to this Android phone, because WinMo support is dieing. I have found Android to be even less customizeable then WinMo, and with fewer of the apps that I want. But the potential for customizing Android is there, just not where WinMo was. But then WinMo had about 15 years head start.
That being said, even a few years ago, with all of the abilities I had with WinMo, there were people that I would not have recommended it to. Basically, they would not have wanted to learn the system and the tricks. They aren't geek. They are better off inside the 'walled garden' that Apple provides. They are better off being handed a locked down device, being patted on the head, and sent off to go play inside the 'safe place'.
Nobody here knows you well enough to know if you want a device that can be modified and tweaked to your likeing, or if you want a device that doesn't even let you swap batteries and memory cards. That is a choice YOU have to make.
The thought that Apple's iTunes store decides what is or is not good for you, revolts me. If it were the only game in town, I imagine i would do without. But some see it as an advantage, because you are more protected from problem software.
I know what direction I am headed, thus I am here.
As for them dropping the NE2 program, I can only hope that they are going to hold down the prices on new devices when you re-up for 2 years, to make up for it. I feel it as a mistake though. They are going to get more people defecting to other carriers that have as good, or better, prices on their devices. No reason to stay with VZW if the NE2 money isn't there.
BTW: For my switch to Android, I bought a used device to hold me over. I didn't want locked into any device for 2 years right now. I very much suspect that later in 2011, there will be a number of very fast dual core devices with 4G abilities hitting the market. If I had bought into any device today on a 2 year contract, in about 6 - 10 months I would likely be really unhappy that I was locked into another year with it. If you buy the VZW iPhone (or about anything) for 2 years, even if you like the iPhone, I suspect you will be kicking yourself later in the year.
