I'm in a pickle...I have an original Moto Droid and have really enjoyed the device and the platform, but think I may want to try the iPhone 4 for a change of pace....my dilema lies in the ending of the Annual Upgrade/New Every 2 program....do I get a Fascinate now and get grandfathered into the program (even with the iPhone 4, Thunderbolt and Bionic right around the corner)? Would love to be able to upgrade again in a year but the allure of the iPhone maybe too much....thoughts? Suggestions? I would really like a device that has enough juice to use it moderately throughout the day without the battery draining completely...as it stands now, it gets me through 8-5

From what I heard on the news you only get "Grandfathered" into the program if you have an update at this time that's not used. If you have used your update for this contract cycle then you are out of the NE2 program.

why on earth would you spend a penny on that pile of crap called the iPhone. that stupid thing is locked tighter than a german nun's chastity belt. thats not your iPhone, it belongs to steve. the music you download from itunes, its not yours, its steves. the fascinat, and for that matter any newer android phone is leaps and bounds better than any terd steve jobs can crap out. the fascinate is much more customizable, has better hardware, better, well everyting. for instance i like audio books, my wife does not. if i had an i phone, and i was listening to my book and then say pick up my wife from work, i would have to stop my audio book and start music. now i have lost my place in the book. not so with the fascinate. the soloution, 2 music apps. that simple. thats just one example. the thing i hate most about apple is how locked tight it is. you can only authorize so many computers or iPods, you cant do anything with YOUR apple product that steve doesnt want you to.

just my humble opinoin. :D

@gunnermike, tell us what you really think :p

If you are coming from a Droid, you will be disappointed in th lack of customization in the iPhone. I'm not talking about it being locked or hacking it, I mean the phone itself is pretty basic.

That being said, it's one smooth and silky OS. It does have it's place for a segment of people. If you have an iPod Touch, then you pretty much have the iPhone experience so you know what I'm talking about.

The new Android phones coming out are pretty sweet. I want the Bionic.

It comes down to what you feel is best for you, and what phone fits what you need it for on a daily basis. VZW will still have a 14 day return policy at least, so if you don't like the phone you get, take it back and get another.

I would steer clear of the iPhone for the simple reason that a newer version should be releasaed over the summer... Why buy one how that will be updated in a matter of months?

I would say most definitely choose Android. Better platform and all. √

I live in central Nebraska so 4G service (or new LTE Verizon phones) are probably not as attractive as they would be to others...the way I see it, the iPhone is a more polished product right and the apps are quite a bit better/more refined on it...I'm thinking I will try it out for a couple of years, let Android catch up and then make my choice

I had an iPhone (3G) for two years before getting an Android. It's a nice OS, and the iPhone 4 is a beautifully designed piece of hardware, but being what it is, it comes with a LOT of baggage - you have to use iTunes to manage pretty much everything, you don't have simple access to the storage on the phone, you have pretty much zero customization beside rearranging icons, you have to be very careful with OS upgrades because they all try to prevent you from downgrading if issues arise, simple things like changing the screen brightness and turning on/off WiFi are buried several menus deep in the settings, and the OS doesn't allow useful things like widgets to provide easy access to that type of thing, etc.

It's a slick phone, but for my personal tastes, I'd never buy another, they're just too limiting. If you know anyone with an iPod touch, borrow it for a few days, that's pretty much the OS you'll be stuck with for the next two years.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with an iphone if you don't mind having limitations placed on what you can do with it and how you use it. The iphone 5 is, however, on the horizon, and the rumors suggest it's going to be released for both GSM and CDMA services when it's ready.

I suppose both android and iphone are in the same boat if you're considering the fascinate as your alternative. There's bigger and better things on the horizon than the fascinate on the android side of things too. You sound like you've already made up your mind though.

It is a decision that YOU need to make for what YOU want.

I had used WinMo (Pocket PC, Win CE) phones and devices for many many years. I had a long list of apps that I added to those devices. I just switched to this Android phone, because WinMo support is dieing. I have found Android to be even less customizeable then WinMo, and with fewer of the apps that I want. But the potential for customizing Android is there, just not where WinMo was. But then WinMo had about 15 years head start.

That being said, even a few years ago, with all of the abilities I had with WinMo, there were people that I would not have recommended it to. Basically, they would not have wanted to learn the system and the tricks. They aren't geek. They are better off inside the 'walled garden' that Apple provides. They are better off being handed a locked down device, being patted on the head, and sent off to go play inside the 'safe place'.

Nobody here knows you well enough to know if you want a device that can be modified and tweaked to your likeing, or if you want a device that doesn't even let you swap batteries and memory cards. That is a choice YOU have to make.

The thought that Apple's iTunes store decides what is or is not good for you, revolts me. If it were the only game in town, I imagine i would do without. But some see it as an advantage, because you are more protected from problem software.

I know what direction I am headed, thus I am here.

As for them dropping the NE2 program, I can only hope that they are going to hold down the prices on new devices when you re-up for 2 years, to make up for it. I feel it as a mistake though. They are going to get more people defecting to other carriers that have as good, or better, prices on their devices. No reason to stay with VZW if the NE2 money isn't there.

BTW: For my switch to Android, I bought a used device to hold me over. I didn't want locked into any device for 2 years right now. I very much suspect that later in 2011, there will be a number of very fast dual core devices with 4G abilities hitting the market. If I had bought into any device today on a 2 year contract, in about 6 - 10 months I would likely be really unhappy that I was locked into another year with it. If you buy the VZW iPhone (or about anything) for 2 years, even if you like the iPhone, I suspect you will be kicking yourself later in the year.

Android is for ppl like us who cruise phone forums, those who like to customize, hack, flash roms, kernels, themes, fonts etc. We just like the control we have.

iphone like gunner said is locked real tight. I just hate icons plastered all over ur screen.

Go ahead and get iphone if you must, but you'll get tired of it fast. I have a friend with an iphone who is bummed after playing with my fascinate.

I have been on my fascinate for a bit now, coming from a droidx, droid inc, droid 1 and 2. The Fascinate is nice for sure. I love it. But i am a mac user and love the OS on the iPhone. People are always going to hate one way or the other and thats just the nature of the beast. It is always going to be like that. So the opinions of others should not be the deciding factor for you.

However, as has been stated in the thread already, the newer iphone will be out sometime this summer. I would hope sooner than later, but it will be there. I personally am going to wait i think and see how it looks. I would like an iphone now (and might just buy a used one in a week or two or trade my fascinate for one) and then see if the new iphone uses LTE. If it does, im in and i will be on that phone. I can barely get from 8am-7pm on a full charge with decent use on my fascinate and it gets the best battery life of all of the droids i have owned. My room mates ip4 gets well over that with the same amount of use.

Wait for it to come out, play with it, if you like it great! It's an amazing phone, it really is. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other options out there that are killer as well.

I paid etf with att for vzw fascinate. My wife and I had iphone 4's. My iphone was jail broken but even with that I still wanted something more. I rarely used the ffc. The camera on the back was simply amazing and I miss that, having trouble replicating the same quality with the fascinate (could be me though). But after having the fascinate for over a month I can tell you I wouldnt go back. My experience has been excellent with android. Frustrated with the flash issue like everyone else but it will come when its time. My advice as an iphone 4 fanboy convert is to give android a chance you will not regret it.

Is suggest not to get the Fascinate at all!!! I also dont think the Iphone is worth it either. All the Iphone is really is a status symbol. Thats all. Wait for the LTE phones would be my suggestion.

Android > iOS.

That said, I would probably go for a dual-core Android device because they are so close to coming out you can smell them cooking!

More raw power yum!

agreed. Both are old technology and will be outdated very soon. That said, I love my Fascinate but wouldn't buy one right now if I were eligible with the other phones on the horizon. That and Samsung can't seem to figure out how to make a major OS upgrade in the US
