I'm not sure this is the correct place to post this but thought I'd toss it out there... Mods are welcome to move to proper location if needed. Thnx
I had been thinking about using PdaNet for some time after reading Kyle Gibb's post dated 5-25-2010. Since, I've have been trying to gather any useful information before jumping in. Admittedly, I'm somewhat techno challenged but love this sh!# when I get it to work for me!
First, let me say I love my Dinc and feel that Google maps are extremely useful when I'm trying to find an unfamiliar location. But face it, that little screen has some limitations when navigating on the fly. The ability to link or tether my little notebook and take better advantage of the Dinc's 3G capabilities has always peeked my interest.
So finally I decided it was time to take the plunge. I downloaded the PdaNet app (free version for now) onto my phone then downloaded and ran the .exe file on my notebook then tried to run through the setup via Dinc. No go! After spinning my wheels for awhile and thinking about it, the light bulb finally came on and I remembered a little something I had read in the user manual about tethering and having to first install HTC Sync. I hadn't read this anywhere in any discussions re; tethering!
Hoping that the sync and it's associated drivers would help I did a search and found the HTC Sync, (HTC Mobile Phones - Product Support - Smartphones Help ~ Select A Device ~ scroll down through Select Product ~ click on DROID INCREDIBLE by HTC (Verizon) ~ click on the DOWNLOADS tab ~ click on the Download under the Software heading.) The set up is fairly intuitive and easy to follow. Once I got the little green icon on my task bar indicating proper setup and functioning sync I went back and re ran the PdaNet .exe Followed it's setup and prompts and voila' my tethering works and life is good!
I should note; I'm running XP on my notebook with the latest updates and service packs and am not sure if my experience was unique. Also, I've opted out of the 2.2 Froyo update. Stock 2.1 no root. Yah, I know, this probably negates 90% of it's usefulness of this post for many of the users here!
Another quirk I've noticed is that now, next to my pc onscreen pointer, the hourglass blinks on like every 6 seconds. A little annoying but I figure I can live with it for the advantage of having a larger screen and map view. I think maybe my pc is searching for the PdaNet Broadband Connection.
After accomplishing this I was feeling lucky so I went on to setup EasyTether lite with no problems. (I'm aware of the secure site limitations of this app.) If this works I may upgrade to the paid version of this as well. What the hey... One can never have the bases covered enough when you're on the side of the road trying to find your destination. Right? Particularly when your business depends on it.
Please post your comments so we all may benefit from your experience as well. Thanks!
Also, many thanks to Kyle Gibb through who's selfless advice helped me feel brave enough to give this a shot. Thanks Kyle!
