Disabling OS update?

Hi - I work for a group that is planning to use the G1(.x) in a research study. We'll be doing some socket communication (via WiFi) with the device over the course of several months. During this time we don't want the device to bug the user (study participant) about OS updates. Is there a way to block this? Or make it manual - so our study coordinator could tell the phone to update?
