If the photos were saved locally, use My Files or a 3rd party file manager app to check the Downloads directory or elsewhere for those pictures.

@B. Diddy I looked in files but they aren't there. some of those 3rd party apps want to access too much on your phone. Thx for the help

Do you know if the photos were saving to Internal Storage or the microSD card? Files that suddenly disappear from an SD card can be a sign of card corruption.

@B.Diddy I have no idea if they are saved to my SD card. But I do see something when I go to my gallery and see pictures ext SD (38) does that mean I have 38 pictures on my SD card. I have others saved to or in my Dropbox. I thought that when I took pictures they automatically saved to my card..

@B.Diddy if my SD card is/was corrupt would I be able to tell.. what should I lookout for? I know with each lollipop update I have lost pictures. Screenshots didn't come back.

Ext SD means the external microSD card. So something is saving images there. The Camera app should have a setting to choose to save to Internal Storage or SD card. But downloading files (like the images attached to your Gmail) should go to Internal Storage.

To check for corruption, you can unmount the card (in Settings>Storage), remove it, and insert it into your computer. Then run chkdsk: http://forums.androidcentral.com/am...guide-using-chkdsk-fix-corrupted-sd-card.html

I had/have the same problem. I found a work around.

As far as I can tell if you download a photo from gmail it goes into your "download" folder in "Gallery". At first it seems like random photos are disappearing, but then you realize it is only the photos downloaded from Gmail. In my case the photo vanished after deleted the gmail/email it was sent from. If the gmail was still in the "Trash" folder then the photo remained in the Gallery Download folder, once the gmail was completely deleted "Empty Trash" then the photo vanished with it. This shouldn't be possible because a "download" should save to the device, but on the Galaxy S5 suspiciously that is not the case.

To make sure you do not lose your gmail photo downloads do this:
Open Gallery >> open the album called "Download" >> press and hold the thumbnail of the photo you want to save until the checkmarked box appears >> drag the photo to a *different album >> a popup box will ask you if you want to MOVE or COPY the photo, follow the prompts >> select move.

* If you haven't created any other albums you can do so by going to the top banner in Gallery, there is an icon of a 'file with a + on it'. opening that will allow you to create albums in the Gallery App.

Once you have moved the photo from the download album to any different album it will not vanish after you delete the email. Make sure to move the photo before deleting the email or it will be gone.

I hope this helps.

- - I just want photos to download and individual open text/gmail alerts to work like my old KitKat OS Razr Maxx pre lollipop but that seems too much to ask from Samsung/Lollipop/Verizon/Google/Android... a phone that actually ALERTS when someone has responded. Sigh, the good old days...

That's what I was looking for when I found your question.

Thank you @lollipopfail. I'm so paranoid when it comes to my pictures. I double saved them on dropbox. I've seen the file + app under my gallery but never used it. I will now..
Again thanks.
