Disappointed there's no Wireless Charging for the AT&T version of the G2

I was at Best Buy yesterday because I wanted to see a Nexus 5 to determine if it would be a suitable replacement phone for my 81 year old father.

I wasn't too impressed with the Nexus 5 so I checked out some other phones while I was at Best Buy. I stumbled across the LG G2 and was really impressed - my Dad likes a bigger screen and I think he'd even like the button arrangements on the back. I knew the Verizon version of the G2 had Qi wireless charging and I assumed that all of the carriers would offer this feature. As I investigated further I was disappointed to learn that AT&T G2s don't have wireless charging.

I've read some reports that AT&T had Qi wireless charging removed from a Nokia phone - the theory was that AT&T will not support the Qi standard and is waiting until next year to push a different wireless charging method. It appears like wireless charging may be the next VHS vs Betamax saga.

I was hoping I might be able to easily add Qi to the AT&T version of the G2 but unlike the Samsung phones it doesn't appear there's an easy solution.

Has anyone added Qi to their AT&T G2?

LG announced that they would releasing a wireless charging case for the G2, but so far they're only planning on a European release, and there's no guarantee that it'll come out in the US. Some people have tried to mod their G2s to add wireless charging capability, but it's a hack job at best, nothing as elegant as the built in charging on the Verizon version.

Sadly, it doesn't look like wireless charging will be coming anytime soon to the non-Verizon G2s.

Thanks for the information.

I was looking at some of the Samsung phones and there are some pretty slick Qi solutions but I couldn't find anything that looked as simple for the G2. It's too bad because I think the G2 would have been the perfect phone for my Dad on AT&T.

I am in the same boat as you. I've been trying to find out information confirming or denying being able to retrofit the coil and connecting board/ribbon cable setup from the Verizon model to other carriers. Very surprising that I can't find anything on the matter. You can pick up the board and verizon model backplate for under $40, which would be worth it for some.
