Disappointed with T-Mobile and cell phone woes

So far things are working fairly well now that I've switched to the grooveip/google voice/hangouts combo. The only issue is sometimes I sound a little funny when calling landlines.

It's too bad I couldn't get a good data only plan with 5gb of LTE for cheaper from T-Mobile or a more reliable carrier.

Uggh I went to a car race in Monterrey and had 0 reception for calls or data. My girlfriend on ATT had full bars of HSPA, she doesn't have an LTE phone so maybe she would have had LTE too.

This meant I couldn't use GPS navigation on the way back had I not had someone with me I would have been lost.

Basically I can't rely on my GPS or phone anymore. :(

Does ANYONE in the US have a plan for anywhere near this price that offers the same amount with a minimum of 2gb of data? I don't care at all about talk and text would even take data only. I'll even take slower data speeds.

Your only bet would be ATT. The other options (like Verizon) are more expensive.

Ok so if I switch to a post-paid plan I can get 50mb of roaming on other networks. Which is more than enough to save me in a pinch with GPS. Does anyone have experience with this, how well will it work? will I get at least hspa speeds?

I am officially giving up and going back to Att with 450min/pay-per-use texting/ and 3gb of data. It costs more than twice as much as T-Mobile but it's the only way to keep my phone (aka not switching to sprint or verizon), and get decent data speeds with reliable coverage. At least I will be able to rely on my phone again. Going to switch on the 16th, the last day of my t-mobile month.

I explored so many options even getting a Nexus 7 LTE coupled with a bluetooth headset and using it as a phone on ATT's 3gb $30 data plan but there are to many what if's about it and it's pretty cumbersome to carry around a 7in tablet and bluetooth headset.

What is your phone? And are you going to stay on Google voice?

I don't see google completely pulling the ability to make voip calls on a mobile device but who knows. Maybe it would allow for natively using google voice?

That would be awesome. I still just keep Google voice as backup line. Don't want to commit to getting a new number as I can't port my number in and when/if they do decide to Axe gv like reader then I'd be screwed

You can port your google number out of google voice so I guess if they did decide to axe it and I found that everything was on my google voice number I could just replace my normal cell number

Just realized you said you are on a GPE S4 for T-mobile. This may be your issue. The GPE only works for HSPA on T-Mobile where they have reframed it. If it's still the older style it won't pick data up.

Well I do get LTE in certain rare spots.

Does T-Mobile have different coverage between pre and post paid?

(EDIT: Talked to T-Mobile pre and post-paid are the same coverage

4g LTE yes but HSPA (3g / 4g) you won't get... That's probably why you had so many issues. If you weren't in a LTE area you didn't have data versus someone with a carrier version of the phone could possibly have data via HSPA.
